Tomato??

So the other day one of the tomato flowers died and fell off. Do tomatoes always grow after the flower falls off? The "tomato" I posted a picture of is brown. What does that mean? Is it not fertilized? Is a tomato going to grow? Thanks!

The bloom will die and fall off. If a tomato doesn't grow then the flower probably didn't get pollinated. It is not unusual for that to happen, especially on some of the first blooms. And yes, that is where a tomato grows.

Hmmm.

That doesn't look real promising, @mydogdory .

The conditions were probably not right. Tomatoes are self-pollinating. They have "perfect" flowers with ovary and stamen, and petals closed around them. That doesn't mean that pollination is a sure thing.

Many of the flowers will fail on my plants now that they are out in the open garden. I don't know tho; I'd expect the flowers just to drop off. Maybe there is a green tomato in there.

Time will tell.

That might be part of the bloom hanging on. Give it a few more days to see if a little green nub starts to show. There will be other blooms on your tomato and it will set fruit!

mydogdory, I've never had brown nubs, mine have always been green and a tomatoe grown from there. I think brown ones are not a good sign. Sorry, but I would think you will still have plenty of tomatoes from others. Your plant looks healthy from what I can see.

Well 4 of my tomato plants I replaced a couple weeks ago because they weren't looking good at all and I figured it would be easiest just to replace. The newer plants are doing awesome! I kept two of the old plants because they looked okay and also as kind of an experiment. The two old plants kind of look sick compared to the new plants. The plant in the picture is one of the old plants. So I guess that could be that it's not a healthy plant.

Another question!!!! I went outside to take some pictures and there are flea beetles! Are they bad?
