Last night went to Home depot, all trees and shrubs where 50% off. Had a hard time not buying any. I am putting in a orchard , 50% off apple and pear trees was tempting. But I am looking for trees on 111 rootstock. Was hard to walk away empty handed.

Good for you Nyboy having that strong will power! Those sale prices sure tempt us. But I tell myself ok it was $400 and now $100 but that's still $100! :ep

I've made those types of mistakes before. If you don't get what you want it's money wasted, not saved. Then there is your investment in time and effort.

You're our new poster child for plant sales self control NYboy! :thumbsup

Way to hold yourself back. I'll try to remember your example next time I'm at the nursery. Everybody is trying to move those last plants of the season and it's tough when you see something you've been wanting to add.

Thistle, it's ok to buy something on clearance as long as it's something that you have been wanting. Like Ridgerunner says, buy something because you've been wanting it not just because it's a good deal. I have to remember that! Ha

Well I was giving myself a lot of latitude when I said "something you've been wanting". Usually when I first see it, it's the first time I realize I've been wanting it! And that would explain all the bed expansions...

If you buy NOW, I would suggest that you immediately repot and then put the tree AND pot in a hole in one of your vegetable beds. You can wait until after harvest, but don't wait until you get a freeze.
I've done this several times and kept my clearance trees alive and healthy. The last one was my magnolia tree and, with NO wind break, but surrounded and banked by lots and lots of compost, it survived the numerous days of -10 to -20 degree 2014 winter temperatures, with wind chills. You know, it should not have lived.
I have wintered a pear tree, and a peach tree like this before. I lost an apple tree only bc I put it into a big pot that didn't drain and I rotted out the roots. Remember to use a pot that drains, too.
This year my magnolia tree is in it's permanent spot, ~13 ft. east of my house, so it should do pretty well.
Just some FYI. :D

I managed to buy all of my Maple, Crabapple , Birch, trees Black Lace Huckleberry and blueberry bushes on clearance prices from Home Depot and/ or Lowe's and a wholesale blueberry nursery that were exactly the types that I needed and / or wanted before I went shopping for them for this property. All are happy and hearty. :celebrate That is after I purchased some dormant Maple trees from a nursery that specialized in them . I planted them immediately upon receiving them in the winter , then they all died within days of leafing out that spring, even the nursery's replacement trees. :duc
