Under the wood pile

cool looking salamander! i've seen those on occasion up here, but i mostly see the red ones when i've removed wood from the ground during the early spring into wet summers.

What a beauty! I love salamanders. How big is he? When my DH and I were in the mountains in North Carolina, I found some baby salamanders that were only about an inch long. I have a photo somewhere of one in the palm of my hand. So tiny. Made me want to take a bunch home, but I refrained. :P

The only spotted salamanders I have seen have ALL yellow spots. This one is cool with the orange spots!

Who newt we had polka-dotted salamanders here...
;)

I wonder if salamanders all have quite small ranges. That they are "localized," if you will.

If you can do some searching, Wendy, you may find that he is really quite a rare critter. That might be true with the "Coeur d'Alene salamander" which apparently, is just within about 100 miles from here and so seldom found that little is known about it.
