I noticed that apple appearance differ by sun exposure on the tree. There are also like 10 "sub-varieties" of each variety!

I asked how it tasted and he said skin was tough and flavor was bland.

so why care what its is. Mary if it is a very old tree might be a cider apple.

Interesting article Steve.
There are many old apple trees in Farragut state park. The deer get most of the ones that are low enough to pick, but sometimes you can reach a few from horseback, and the ones I've eaten were very very good. Crisp and sweet/tart and juicy.
I wonder about when they were planted. Before the Navy base, or maybe by the Navy?

That was the second time that I have read about that apple researcher.
Farragut? My uncle went to radio school there.
The guy who once owned my house taught radio school there.
It is too late to ask that question of either. EDIT: But, when he came back from the Pacific Theatre, my uncle worked for the railroad. He may have planted apple trees along the tracks, throwing cores out of the window of the locomotive
