The right hand posts are set in concrete. The two left hand posts are in a two foot square with soil so that vines can be planted there to climp up and eventually cover the patio cover.
Standing near Southwest Corner, looking Northeast.

San Diego - Zone 23
Top of cover gets Southern California sun from mid-morning until two hours before sunset.

One friend suggests jasmine. What are my options?

Come on- zone 23!! I didn't even know the numbers went that high! You can plant anything you want! I vote with vfem- grapes would give you shade and a lovely treat! Wisteria is another option- but it might take over the world, where you are...Lovely patio area, let us know what you decide!

You have so very many options where you're located. I'm with V, grapes and kiwis would be an excellent edible.

As well as Jasmine (and there are many kinds ), there's honeysuckle, Carolina Jessamine, mandevilla, guinea gold vine, passion vine...
