I have a spot where I would like to plant a semi-dwarf fruit tree, possibly a pear. I haven't decided yet what type of pear or fruit.

The problem is the area is not in full sun. It gets filtered morning light, full sun mid day for a couple hours and then shade late afternoon. I want to plant a fruit tree and this is the only space available. Bay area weather has mild winters and cool summers.

I have a semi-dwarf fuji in full sun that my neighbors apple tree will hopefully pollinate so I don't want another apple.

The tree doesn't have to produce alot, just some.

Please give me ideas!!

Thanks
Mary

That filtered morning sun is probably from a nearby tree. Is the afternoon shade also from a tree? Or, is this shade from a building?

I'm wondering about the root zones of more mature trees.

Apricot trees can live in drier soil than some other fruit trees. Perhaps, if there is competition from other tree roots they could find enough moisture. Probably, because they also fruit early, shade that slows the fruit development may not be too important. But, I really don't know - too many "perhaps" and "probablies" in there.

Have you thought about a nice sturdy trellis and a thornless blackberry?

. . . just an idea and a question about shade .
