would like to see your 2013 garden

I snapped some new photos a couple days ago...
We've harvested lots of cuc's, zuc's, patty pan, and I have lots of spaghetti squash and butternuts on their vines as well. Tomato plants are all either loaded w/ set fruit, or w/ blooms (the ones I planted a bit later in season).

I broke my foot in a couple places and broke my pinky toe, so putting UP the harvest has been a bit of a challenge this year. My beets are still in the ground. UGH!! I didn't get as many of the cuc's processed as I would have liked, but the chickens thought they were fantastic! I'm not too concerned about losing some of the cuc's tho ... we still have canned goods from last year, and loads more cuc's forming on the vines.

Thank you, VFEM! :) I almost didn't put a garden in this year. With the years of drought we've had... and this year, after I had committed to it, we almost lost it all to grasshoppers. Which we are still fighting, actually. I just couldn't stomach the thought of NOT having a garden and at least trying to grow a portion of our own food. And, now I'm glad I did put a garden in! We haven't had the ridiculous high temps and southern wind like we've had in recent years past, so I've actually had a bit more success this year than I expected.

I've learned so much about gardening while living in Texas. I'm always amazed too, that I can get anything to grow here. Haa!

It sure looks like your grasshopper defense was successful!

Your volunteer tomato must be what is called a multiflora type. Have you grown Ildi or Riesentraube? I have had Ildi in the garden quite a few times. It is another multiflora type and my substitute for Yellow Pear.

Your watering system will probably work well with Yellow Pear. For reasons that are beyond me, I've got YP in the garden again this year. That plant is just waiting until the fruits start to ripen, the sprinkler water hits it and they . . . split!

I haven't grown Ildi or Riesentraube. I suspect that the Juliets I had last year in the blue tubs next to where the volunteers sprouted are to thank for the surprise plants. The fruits on the volunteers are shaped just like the Juliet's and have the same taste and body texture. Meaty. Oval shaped fruit.

I have always been thrilled w/ the performance of the Juliets here. But couldn't find a single plant this year in the garden centers.

Cherry sized tomato plants were sparce this year. (I have had TERRIBLE luck starting from seed here.) So when I found a couple Super Sweet 100's I opted for those instead, thinking they might be all I could find. While 1 of those is performing wonderfully, another was the plant I had to pull early on this year. And I have another Super Sweet that is doing the same thing, planted in a totally different location. Long, lanky branches, small leaves, etc. Needless to say, I won't be choosing that variety next year! They aren't very consistent from plant to plant. At least, that's my experience w/ them this year. Now, if they all performed like the 1 good Super Sweet I have, then that plant would be a GOLD STAR in my book.

I have a sungold, and a couple black cherry plants coming along as well. They were planted a bit later than the yellow pear, so they aren't as large yet, or have as much fruit set, but they are coming along nicely.

Next year, I've decided that I'll be planting more tomatoes, and fewer cuc's. And I haven't given up on starting from seed ... try, try again, I say.

Collector, your garden looks so lush and healthy. Love that scarecrow! And did you build that retaining wall behind your cute little scourge?

I bake my butternut squash till i can put a finger print in it. then I scoop it out add butter brown sugar and cinnamon. It is so Yummy!
Don't forget a pinch of nutmeg! Really brings out the "fall flavor". I mix all 3 ingredients into a small bowl then add it to my squash.

Make me feel all guilty now for not posting pictures. I gotta figure out a plan B for getting some pictures loaded of my "making due 2013" garden.

Everybody's hard work looks fantastic!!!
