Wow, I need to try this!! I always struggle with carrots.

My problem with carrots is a result of three factors :

#1 The requirement to sow those small seeds only about 1/4-1/2 of an inch deep
#2 The nearly 3 weeks waiting for emergence
#3 The chance of dry conditions locally

If there is one crop requiring hand watering, it’s carrots. Don’t say to put a cover over the ground and seeds to maintain moisture or there will be a #4, my memory to check for sprouts.

I have had really good success planting radishes in the carrot rows, to mask the smell the flies gravitate to. Coffee grounds (fresh, not used) work pretty good too. If you can cover the smell of the foliage you won't have much of a problem with the flies. You do need to reapply the coffee occasionally as the smell wears off and the flies have a few life cycles.
