We know that the tornadoes did NOT show up in Lavender's yard because she was here yesterday talking about pond plans .

I had bean seeds in the mailbox (!) from @Bluejay77 but they will have to wait a few weeks. Perpetual Spinach! I need to find the Perpetual Spinach seed!

Yeah, the winds didn't get me (some damage to a home, a farm and some trees out west of me)... I just had a bit of self inflicted damage to my back, but I can walk better today, and one more day of rest and I'll be good to go!
I guess ya just have to be reminded of your limits.

My sweet nephew came and tilled the rest of the garden, but very cold nights all this week and MUD will delay planting for about a week. Hoping the onions didn't float away.

I haven't been posting on this but everything is going out now!

I set out about 40 tomato plants today. Squash, pumpkins, cucumbers, and some of the melons went out to the garden yesterday. The first sowings of sweet corn and even some green beans were made.

Watching that the weather doesn't change to cold again! Cooling over the weekend . . .

I carried the 7 youngest and the last tomato plants out to the spaces we left for them in the tomato patch. That involves a pickup ride.

Luckily, I could entertain myself planting some interesting bean seed! The winds were gusting above 30mph. I felt sorry for the plants already out there!

Here is what I gathered before the trip out:


Garbanzo the dog intended to take her toy sheep with her but it was forgotten in the excitement of departure!

I started off sowing some of Marshall's Eye of the Tiger and got the varieties from Russ in the ground. Then, finished a 4' by 35' bed with Bei soybeans and some of the Jacob's Cattle and Soldier beans I had last year. Oh yes, there were some pole beans that I haven't grown in a couple years that I got in the ground over with the "volunteer" Cascade Giant Rattlesnake beans .

The tomato youngsters came back home after their "visit."

Also, about 9 Blacktail Mountain watermelon plants and 4 Alvaro Charentais melon plants went into the garden. They joined the Passport Galia melons out there already!

I figured that they are so low to the ground that it should afford them some protection from the wind.

i have a bunch of Blacktail Mountain watermelons that just went in about an hour ago! i also got a bunch of other watermelon, Asian melons, cantaloupe and some french melons in the ground.

I have this sneaking suspicion . .

. that those French melons may also be Charentais, @Chickie'sMomaInNH .

This will be my 3rd variety to try and replace Burpee's discontinued Honey Girl Charentais.

Today Ava and I planted a 20 foot row of asst. cukes. She planted 5 rows of asst. sunflowers all by herself and a short row of cosmos. I put in 6 okra (started indoors) and 38 asst. pepper plants. So much more to do, but it's slow going. I sprained my ankle, right off the bat on Saturday! (I was strolling out to the chicken coop...such a beautiful day it was...and in lala land admiring my freshly tilled garden I fell in an old chicken dust bathing hole.) It was hurting less today, so I was able to finally get something done.

Ahhh, don't you hate that? Hopefully it will heal fast, it always seems that when you need to be at your best to get things done something happens to slow you down. I know all about lala-land, I am a regular tourist there.

Your little Ava is quite a gardener now! Tell her we're proud of her and will need to see some pictures of her garden when it's up.

Ava is unstoppable. She has a great work ethic, particularly with outdoor work of any kind. She wanted to help with the peppers too, but I had to send her to play with Superbaby since there were several kinds and I had to be careful to mark their locations.

When I fell in the hole, all I could do was lay in the grass crying NO, NO, NO. I was so mad at myself. Impeccable timing. I've sprained my ankles so many times over the years, they are like spaghetti now.
