Here is the garlic I pulled up today. This was planted last fall. We have about this much more that we planted this spring. Looks like it will be ready to pull soon. I don't think those heads will be as big, though. Apparently we need to stick to planting garlic in the fall!
Of course we planted some early girl, big beef, sun gold and celebrity, but we found a couple of interesting sounding types at the nursery that we decided to try: Oregon Spring and . . .uh oh, the plant marker is gone! Well I guess we will have a mystery tomato! Now we just need to find some...
The other day a lady came into the little library up here in the hills where my daughter works and gave her a big box of strawberry plants that she had thinned out of her patch. Since my daughter lives in an apartment in town she gave them to me and even helped me plant them! We have no idea...
I have been harvesting lettuce from volunteers that came up from last years crop, but I also planted a large bed of mixed lettuce earlier in the spring. Wouldn't you know, before we could even eat one single leaf of the beautiful baby greens they all went bitter and I had to tear the whole bed...
Things are finally starting to bloom around here. The spirea was started from a stick 3 years ago and the iris is one of many my in laws have given me. The others aren't blooming yet.
:yaIt was warm and beautiful, so I got quite a bit done today! Turned some cow poop and compost into one of the beds, spent over an hour digging grubs out of another bed with tons of help from the dogs, pulled the weeds out of 2 other beds, and then had to go apply ice and heat to my back...
So, last year's garden got pretty much decimated by hundreds of cucumber beetles (and various other pests). I've done some research and it looks like they will probably come back this year, so after doing some research, here's my plan. After seeding everything this year, I will saturate the...
We have 2 4X8 beds that had cooler weather crops in them - peas, etc. What can we plant/start right now that will do ok in the heat of summer? Our growing season will last until at least the end of October.
These are Heritage Raspberries and Black Satin Blackberries. We put 2 in last year and 2 in this year. They have started looking really ugly and all of the little berries on them have dried up and died. I searched the internet and studied pictures, but I can't seem to figure out what's going...
Because where else can you be pruning your roses and watching several hawks play in the breeze and sing to each other at the same time? Where else can you take your dogs on a hike along the creek and flush a bunch of wild turkeys out of the brush? Where else can you be holding your horse for...
So, we have 12 feet of trellis for our pole beans. We planted the whole 12 feet at one time. Now I am wondering if we can plant another round in between our current vines, which are about 6 inches apart. If we do it this way, there is no way to pull the older vines out of the way when they...
Over 100 degrees today and supposed to be hotter tomorrow. Over the past week our temps were in the mid 70's to mid 80's, before that we had 90's. My poor plants don't know what to think about all these weird temp fluctuations this year. I, howerver, know exactly what to think. . .:tongue
So, I think I've mentioned on here previously that we have given up trying to plant veggies in the ground here. This weekend we took a bunch more of the chain link fencing we got from hubby's uncle and made another garden area. Then, we made and filled 2 more 4X8 raised planters in...
Our garden got started so late this year that it seems we have been waiting forever to harvest! This week we are finally getting a few summer squash and I see tons of little green tomatoes set, so hopefully we will get some "red" very soon!
Made an interesting observation this morning when I...
This year is proving to be a huge bug year. We started with billions and billions of leafhoppers - they are all over everything, even inside the house. Now we have a grasshopper infestation as well. I went to the local nursery and they said that we are in the middle of a 3-year cycle and that...
I've been poking around trying to get a better handle on how best to provide nutrients for my plants and came across this site. It seems like a great reference, so I thought I would share it. www.natureswayresources.com/resource/infosheets/organicfertilizers.html :)
I just ordered 12 sweet potato slips. Now I just have to figure out where to grow them. About how deep do the tubers grow? Guess I should mentiont that these are Beauregard slips.
I think I'm going to use t-posts with field fencing strung between them for trellising my cucumbers. This would make the trellises about 5 feet tall. Do you think this will be tall enough? I've never grown cucumbers before, so I'm not quite sure what to expect. I've looked at lots of pics...
Hubby and I planted 40 asparagus plants a while back. We followed the directions that came with them and only covered them with a couple of inches of dirt. We were supposed to go back and add more dirt about 2 weeks later, but hubby ended up in the hospital and we didn't get it done. I went...
Haven't been on here much for the past few weeks. DH went to the Dr for pain and ended up having an emergency operation to remove a section of his bowel and his appendix. We are new to the "major operation" thing and I have to say it hasn't been all that much fun. Poor guy is getting really...
