My father spent a while in the hospital from getting poison ivy in his lungs from burning it and breathing it, just as you did. So it can get quite serious! There is a product called Tech-nu soap (it's really more like an oil that you put on and wipe off) that removes PI oils. Best to learn to identify it and avoid it like the plague!
The last bad case I got just from holding one of my free-ranging chickens who had come in contact with it. Since then I've worked diligently to eradicate it.
