Garden Master
DH had time to till the smaller side garden for me last night after he finished mowing. The forecast from here on out says rain-rain-rain! This happens every year. WV monsoon season. If I don't get out there early, I'll have to wait until late May.
I think we're pretty much guaranteed that it will not frost/freeze again now. That week of freezing night time temperatures nuked my pears, but I still have lots of peaches that set. The apple tree bloomed afterward. Really hoping to get some apples this year.
I had the chickens fenced on the side garden fall and half of the winter. Should be very fertile soil. So the girls and I got out ahead of the rain today and planted 6 rows of Delectable Bicolor hybrid sweet corn. Around the perimeter, we also put in one hill each of Charleston Grey watermelon, Moon and Stars watermelon, Sweet Siberian yellow watermelon, Crimson Sweet watermelon (has been foolproof in my garden in years past), Athena hybrid canteloupe (I don't know I'll ever try another, this one is so heavenly sweet and grows so well for me), Fordhook zucchini and Pic-n-Pic hybrid summer squash. I'm going to run out there again when it stops raining and plant some loose leaf lettuce mix and radishes along the sides.
A couple weeks ago, I put bagged compost and manure on the front raised bed and limed it a little. I have cabbage, broccoli and kohlrabi in there (as well as one celeriac plant that came back from last year). They've been slow getting started. I'm kinda worried that it's too rich. Gonna have to go back and check the pH.
Although I never did start any peppers and tomatoes this year, getting a few things going has boosted my spirits and I'm optimistic I'll still get a good garden in this year. My dad has two more weeks of radiation to go and things should settle down for awhile after that.
