Calaveras County Fair & Jumping Frog Jubilee

Mark Twain lived in a cabin south of Angels Camp. Legend has it that Twain overheard a story in a local tavern that inspired his first published work, “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County”. The City of Angels Camp held the first modern frog jump in 1928. It became part of the annual Fair in the 1930’s. The Top 50 frogs qualify for the International Frog Jump Grand Finals, which are held every Sunday afternoon of the Jubilee. The current world’s record was set in 1986 by Rosie the Ribeter. Rosie jumped 21′ 53/4″. The cash prize for breaking the world’s record is $5,000.

Yup. Where I came from. Angels Camp, CA. Mr. Angel founded the city, altho it started as a gold camp with tents.

Murphys was a way station, nine miles east of Angels Camp. Mark Twain's purported cabin is on highway 49, just south of Angels.

The Jumping Frog Jubliee was just a few weekends ago at the fairgrounds, also called Frogtown. Read Mark Twain's short story: The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County.

Today's National High/Low temps:

111 at Death Valley, California

25 at Bodie State Park, California (That's just on the other side of Yosemite from Angels Camp.)

It's a big state and so often the high and low are both in California!

Murphy, my son and husband went golfing today at that golf course by your former place in Angels Camp. They were up doing the annual clean up. Said it was hot but very nice course and so inexpensive. I guess they're used to bay area prices, haha.

I've seen Mark Twains cabin. It's very small.

Just looked it up. He wrote about the frog in 1864, published in 1865. It launched his fame.

He married, built and moved into that above home about 10 years later.
