Mom was getting after me yesterday saying i should eat more salads.

i like salad, but i also do like some variety once in a while so i suggested a carrot salad or a brocolli salad or cole slaw instead.

so the question is, what have you made differently than normal lately?

aside from salads we had some ham roll-ups the other day and those were well received. taco salad was also yummy, but i've now finished that off. today is baked beans, which are common enough here i don't consider that something different.

last week Mom made some Dominoe Bars, which are chocolate graham cracker crust with lemon filling and then topped with a thin layer of dark chocolate. she rarely makes just one of something so i'm sure a few are stuck in the freezer or perhaps she gave them away, but the one pan that was in the fridge is long-gone.

a few weeks ago we made tapioca pudding which was different, but Mom decided that she doesn't like making that so i get to make the next batch.

hmm, trying to think about what else we've done that is out of the ordinary.

for others i'm sure that tart dried cherries and peanut butter in oatmeal would be out of the ordinary, but that has been part of the morning routine here once or twice a week for the past month or two. i like how the tart and sweet combines with the peanut butter, but the peanut butter is just to give the oatmeal more energy and staying power to get me through until later in the day. of course, i do like peanuts and peanut butter so it all is good. i'm avoiding adding extra sugar to this so i skip the brown sugar.

hmm... i guess i talked myself into making breakfast at last... :)

AC is only in the living room. In the heat of the summer, I even put a curtain over the kitchen doorway. Cooling the bedroom is a priority in the evening and, boy, that's about it when the outdoors is above 100°f! Not much room for imaginative cooking.

So when DW just asked if I would like a steak for dinner, obviously thinking that would be a treat - I flinched 😕. It could be cooked outdoors but our deck faces west. The canopy could be set up .... I have opted for Fried Rice.

Now this ain't much different than our frequent stir-fries. It pretty much amounts to stirring the rice into the veggies instead of putting the veggies on rice. They are cut smaller, an egg is included. But, I mean, the rice is already cooked in the rice cooker ...

Steve :)

funny coincidence as we were just talking about fried rice here yesterday.

Mom is attempting fried rice next week. of all the things to be picky about rice is perhaps one of them for me. i like brown rice with some things, but white rice is pretty much not something i'm normally eating at all. i think because as a kid Mom used to make rice pudding as a baked custard and to me that has been my favorite way for me to have rice, but the thing is she won't make it that ways any more and says she doesn't remember (we have the written recipe... :) she just doesn't want to make it - she doesn't like nutmeg at all now).

why i liked it was that it wasn't runny and a creamy pudding but it was pretty solid with the eggy custard and sweet taste along with the nutmeg but then after warming it up you put some milk on it. now, i have no idea why i'm so fixated on this being "rice" and "rice pudding" for me but nothing else comes close and it's "Just Not Right". lol

i am the taste tester here when Mom makes something new so i'm gearing myself up for this coming week.

today's baked beans are almost done.

fried rice is always our option when we run out of ideas :D I personally love to add a lot of chopped Romaine lettuce at the end, when all other ingredients are done, quickly stir them for 30-60 seconds, the texture is quite nice.

Ha! Gotcha ya. DW likes to use brown rice/white rice for her fried rice (just finished lunch ;)). I don't remember ever having straight brown but should be okay. Maybe @Phaedra Geiermann knows.

Here I was feeling guilty because I thought you might be talking about foods to lose weight. And, You start talking about pudding :D!

Yes, I like puddings, too (but don't care much for nutmeg ;)).

Well, fried rice can use everything, I always use whatever I have at hands. Like today I have some shrimp, cucumber, mushroom, basil and egg- that's it. Brown rice keeps more nutrients, a nice option :D
