I'll use @Pulsegleaner 's terminology and change it a little, sounds like the face of someone (;)) heading back into the kitchen after the meal because they aren't "on the clock."

I'm a creature of habit and dang well better be using the clock or there are days that I could be eating non-stop!

To answer your question, Seed': I'm a little hungry before any meal, except breakfast. I learned long ago to eat breakfast or I'd be winding down to a crawl before lunchtime. Finishing a meal without something sweet is difficult for me. If I can just be a little patient, a dessert isn't necessary. Not always patient :).

It's difficult to NOT gain weight in retirement. I'm doing okay but it is with an understanding that the weight would just be fat. Fat fat fat ... unhealthy fat! Eat with some before-hand planning. You will be glad that you did.

back in 2008-2009 i broke my hunger signals. i didn't even know when i was hungry. got down to 135lbs. since then i try to eat breakfast but some days i won't eat until later in the afternoon. sometimes a headache is the result at about 24hrs after last meal. i do drink water regularly no matter what.

i can eat brunch and then later on Mom might warm something up that smells good and then i'll want to eat again, but it is very rare that my stomach makes any noise telling me it wants food or any hunger pangs.

i have about 20lbs i'd like to lose but at the rate i'm going i might be down 7 before spring gets here. 7 is better than none. running a little light would be good for me. bad apple fritter yesterday, grease bomb, not worth what it did to my stomach. even after bean burrito for dinner my stomach was still not happy. had a few carrot sticks later and that helped a great deal.

so mostly i don't eat because of bodily signals, they're mostly not there, thirsty still works. :) i try to eat on a schedule because i think my body does better. if i eat too many sweets in the morning i'll crash eventually and want to take a nap. my standard breakfast of oatmeal, tart cherries and peanut butter has no other added sugars so i don't crash from that at all - i can go from 6am to about 5pm on that. this morning breakfast was macaroni and tomato chunks along with some butter, nutmeg, cinnamon, garlic salt and a shot of ketchup.

emotional eating or eating by habit late at night are two things that i try to avoid and the more i can avoid them the better i feel and the less lbs i'll likely be trying to cope with.

that said, crunchy thick cut raw oats, butter and brown sugar are very appealing to me this time of the year. followed by a glass of milk. hot chocolate with a shot of hot sauce in it too. this cold weather wants me to have more calories and i do want to eat about everything, but i am not actively hungry. it's just me wanting to stuff my gob. :)

This is actually a VERY complicated question for me, if for no other reason than that my depression is simultaneously the reason why I eat so much (and hence, are so obese) AND the persistent guilt reaction I have that makes me feel like I should not eat ANYTHING, EVER. And trying to meet in the middle pleases NEITHER side.

Truly believe that is the answer for 80+% of America. Not that that isn't a legit answer......who wants to see food and think, “that looks and smells like ****, think I want to eat it.
Actually, you could make a very compelling argument that that is EXACTLY what one should do. That way, you are never tempted to overeat. Of course, this makes more sense when viewed through my depressive cynical viewpoint (where ANY pleasure is wrong, and must be totally eliminated.)

Good question. DD and I were talking about this yesterday. She is feeling lightheaded a lot and I noticed after she has drank or ate something sweet and her blood pressure gets low, but I told her I think it is her blood sugar. When she was pregnant with Evelyn she was to monitor her blood sugar and I noticed that when she ate late at night waiting for her husband to get home from work she would have high glucose level in the morning. She was at my house one night and ate earlier than usual and it was chicken, baked potato and asparagus and the next morning her blood glucose level was the best it ever had been, so saying all that I think my problem is a lot to do of when I eat. We eat supper at like 8 to 9 at night. Started years ago because of DH and his work schedule and I have my job typing and get off at 9. I am seriously thinking of starting supper early. Just by what I noticed of DD and her blood sugar levels. I do not eat enough to gain. I am inactive, but not that much. I do enough for the amount of food i eat to at least stay the same. I think carbs at 9 at night is just not right. I eat in the morning because I will be shaky and crash before noon and if I do not eat lunch I will crash, the rest of the day I do pretty could and can go a hours without eating and not crashing. I think the late night carbs is causing my morning problems.

some things I believe in regards to food/weight.

1). I was diagnosed with diabetes because of being tired after eating. Excess blood sugar makes you tired. Switched my diet, it made a huge difference. No easily digested carbs, lowered sugar intake, & eat good fiber foods-oatmeal, whole wheat, etc. (Saved me from drugs & lost 40+#.)
2). Weight gain is # of calories vs calories burnt. When you eat has no effect.
3). I found I was a regimented eater, who ate even if not hungry.
4). Food is a common “drug” when we are happy or sad.
