I KNOW that most of the bean conversations are about how they look, but I was wondering--What do all of your experts think are the best TASTING beans?
Back when they were still pretty new, one of the big selling points Seeds of Change made about the dry bean Hutterite Soup was its ability to make a creamy soup all on it's own when boiled. Assuming that is true (I never got mine to grow) that might be a major positive.

I remember when cleaning up my bean patch on autumn and snaking on the pods too immature to have a chance to be ready before the frost that one of my cow pea plants (a grey speckled one, I think) had unusually sweet pods. And, while the fact I only ever got one pod meant I never actually got to taste any, Coals in the Candle (my wax podded black seeded cow pea) certainly impressed me with how juicy it LOOKED (and the fact the critters ate every pod they could reach on that one while ignoring the Dead Man's Finger sibling plant right next to it would seem to re-enforce that.)

Last year at least it still worked that way, @Bluejay77 . Your network shipment for this season hasn't arrived yet. I will inform you at once about its arrival.

@Artorius:
Hello fellow sufferer. Since we both are sitting in the same boat: do you happen to have any recent experiences in this issue? Did you successfully ship seeds abroad and resp. did you receive some from overseas? Is Poland also so strictly excluded from overseas shipments?

@BeanieQueen

Until July 2021, all shipments from outside the EU reached me without any problem. Then customs regulations changed due to the trade war against Chinese e-commerce giants, and now even the smallest packages with commercial goods are subject to customs duties. Parcels described as a gift are also not safe, because some companies have just started describing them as such. Previously, low-value shipments were not checked, but now the Polish Post charges a fee for each shipment from outside the EU sent for customs clearance, so you understand. Money, money, money everywhere.

From 2021, parcels of seeds from the US, Canada and UK are sent to my friend's address in London, and she or another friend of mine personally brings them to me when they come to Poland. For now, the system is 100% operational, but delays are to be expected. The most important thing is that the seeds reach me safely.

As for the parcels with seeds I send to countries outside the EU, all of them were delivered to recipients from the UK and Canada.
As for the US. All tomato seeds parcels arrived safely, but only 50% of bean seeds. Unfortunately, some of them have been confiscated.

Before the war, I also exchanged tomato seeds with gardeners from Russia. There were no problems. We sent each other cooking magazines with packets of seeds stuck inside. Now I have a lot of recipes for Russian dishes :)

Small shipments from EU countries are still not controlled. Shipping and collection is 100%.

Thank you so much for your detailed and informative reply☺️
Again I found that it is the 'little people' who just want to live in peace and have their little joys with seeds or whatever but have to face the music [in German we would say: to eat out the soup] that others compound. And only seldom decisions from 'above' ever made things easier or more agreeable for the ordinary people..

PS. I am by all means interested in Russian recipes now, especially because this year I will grow the variety Russian Soup which was in @Bluejay77 's prio list.
So, do not throw'em away until the end of this season!! Publish them here and make a contribution to a balanced diet of us all!

PPS. Did you fall off the bed this morning?? It is Sunday and your reply was posted at 06:30 a.m. 😲

in tracking down more information about Purple Dove i saw a reference from @Bluejay77 to Peace Seedlings in 2015 so i nosed around and now i see that they no longer have Purple Dove but they do have:

"Purple Amazon Snap Bush Phaseolus vulgaris 20/ 4.00

Beautiful tasty purple pods, worth growing. Lobitz original."

Also mentioned are:

Red Swan Snap Bush Phaseolus vulgaris 20/ 4.00

Early red skinned 5” pods, tasty, original by Robert Lobitz.

does anyone else have these already and more importantly does anyone have pictures of the seeds in a close enough version where i can get a good look at them?

it's really frustrating to me to go look for beans and nobody posts pictures of the seeds. grrrrr! :)

as a further note i see that Robert's Royalty looks somewhat like some of my off type beans from PD. woohoo! :) :) :) in other words they may be siblings!

from Russ's network listing for Roberts Royalty: "Bush Snap. A Robert Lobitz named variety. He found this bean as a mutation in 1969 among plants he was growing of Royalty Purple Pod. Seed comes from Karen Golden of Highland, Michigan, October 2018."

this is the first reference to anything going back further which is a trail i can dig into more later... :)

p.s. a mutation may really be an out-cross...

p.p.s. Royalty Purple Pod goes back a ways... :)

Peace Seedlings has this listing which intrigues me:

Cherry Lake Snap Pole. Stunning red blushed wax beans, beautiful and productive. Peace Seedlings breeding.

so many beans... where do i start?! :) i am rescued by limiting my main plantings to bush and once in a while semi-runners. *whew!*
