Welcome from the "Frozen Tundra!" (with apologies to @Alasgun , who is from the REAL tundra). I lived & gardened in Cali for 16 years; but always in the more moderate climates of San Jose & San Diego. Your inland climates are much more challenging; I only got to taste that when the Santa Anna winds blew in from there.

Welcome from the San Francisco bay area where I could garden year round but don't. After the harvest and canning all I plant in the fall is snow peas and sugar snap peas.
