Washington state orchards alone grows over half of the US apples and the Pacific Northwest has its own heritage apple sleuth. Along with his group is an orchard in the Willamette Valley of Oregon associated with university botanists.

Thanks for posting. I recall reading this earlier this year and an apple he mentioned caught my attention, but I couldn't remember the name of the apple and I didn't bookmark this article.now I have it thanks to you

I sure would like to get ahold of a few Custard scions to graft. Just the way he described the apple "spicy taste" makes it appealing to me.

What a neat post! Now I want an apple orchard! These old varieties survived disease, insects and produced apples. I wonder if the guy in North Carolina has any that could survive in East Texas?

Has anybody here grown McIntosh Apples?

I have Nova Mac scions on order to graft onto MM111 (semi-dwarf) apple rootstocks come very early spring 2025. Nova Mac is said to basicly be a disease resist McIntosh type apple. So hopefully it won't need a spray program.

Nova Mac is also said to be resistant to the following common apple diseases:

Apple Scab (AS): Resistant
Powdery Mildew (PM): Resistant
Fire Blight (FB): Moderately resistant
Cedar Apple Rust (CAR): Resistant

My plan is to plant two Nova Macs in my modern apple row.

We discovered an apple variety that we had never seen before a couple of years ago in the San Juan Islands. It was an apple with white skin, nice and crisp, sweet, and juicy! We think it was a ghost apple!
