That was my experience also – years ago. I planted them on the north side of the house, along a concrete driveway. Not the best location in this climate, probably.

i only had a few of them to begin with and it grew and flowered for some years, but Mom didn't like it and the rest of the flowers i had around that area and moved them. sometimes i wonder where it might be and if it blooms now in secret...

i have found various bulbs in places that the chipmunks have moved them too. just never know sometimes what nature can get up to (and i'm happy with that).

My post back in Feb. about the compost around the flowers, well it did work. I have new delphinium and a couple of new coneflwoers. I have David phlox and they are taller and I have a couple of new little ones. There are a lot of hollyhocks that were planted late summer. DD has a couple really tall ones. One is a black one from Baker Creek and a red one and I have to look at it closer to see what it is. I started a bunch of Russian yellow, but so far I have not seen a yellow hollyhock. I have a couple of older ones that are really tall and pink. They are most likely Country Romance. I do have a pale yellow, but it might be Indian Spring. I have a black one that I bought from a lady last year that is blooming and one of the Baker Creek Jet Back.

I have a new plan about flowers and weeds. One fence is planted very thick with cosmos and they have choked the weeds out. Another fence has a few hollyhocks and some Shasta daisies. I am going to start a bunch of hollyhocks today and plant them on the inside of the fence and the outside of the fence and spread seeds and in the spring start more and fill in blank spots. The places where weeds are coming on the fence line are where I planted bachelor buttons and morning glories. They are not big enough to bloc weeds, so I am going to plant them on inside fences. I bought Outhouse hollyhocks, some more Indian Spring and Giant Danish. I bought some last year and I don't think they did well and the reviews were bad, but I found somebody else that sold them and had better reviews, so I will try them. I have not had double bloom hollyhocks for at least 10 years, but I think I will start some next spring.

I took a picture of this hollyhock and put a black background so you could really see it. Is this a double bloom hollyhock?

I have no idea how it got there. Thank you.

it doesn't either. :) you're welcome.

as for yellows we've had them here at times through the years but i don't know if we have any now. once the rust came through we didn't get very good crops any more of them. there's a few around here or there still but i don't go out of my way to plant more. they're very hard to weed from between rocks...

I went out and looked and saw yellow hollyhocks and ran and got my camera and they do not look yellow in the picture.

The double bloom, I just looked back some of the seeds I planted and I forgot some and I have another one that I thought was black when it opened it is dark red and a double bloom. I did plant 2 different kinds that have double blooms, Summer Carnival and Fordhook Giant. I bought so many seeds and so excited, I guess I did not look to see they were double bloom. I bought the seeds last year and planted them late summer.
