31 lambs until yesterday morning……

Patches had a single, a white ram lamb. So Sunshine and Parches stay another year. I was out of jugs, so I put Patches in with her twin sister Sunshine.

Lamb count 32.

While I was getting Patches and her baby situated, I heard a baby crying. I went to investigate. A newborn was in the pen with @Margali’s sheep! Only problem with that is none of them were pregnant. I scooped the baby up and set her down in the night pen. I walked the field checking the ewes for messy behinds of a fat ewe suddenly not fat. I was out of places to put moms and baby’s, but remembered where a half hog panel was and went and got it. I put it across a corner making a small triangle pen.

Meantime the ewes were at the gate, certain that I had feed for them. I carried the newborn to the gate, one ewe acted interested so I let her in. Her behind showed the evidence. Negligent mom, charged with abandonment and starving a baby. Sentence, 7 days in jail.

I lured her to the small pen with feed, closed her up and set the baby down. The ewe was B40, a White Dorper and she did not want that thing near her, she butted her away, knocking the baby down. Baby’s mouth was not warm, about to be a crisis. I got a halter and rope, fought to get it put on, tied up B40, plopped myself down in the dirt and pushed the baby to the udder. B40 kicked me, the baby and had herself a fight to the death fit. I was tempted to grant her wish, cuss words flew, I grabbed a hind leg, held tight and finally the baby latched on and sucked. I made sure the little one got plenty to eat. I spent a couple of hours on that project.

The lamb posse wanted in.

Finally had enough to eat!

I tied a chain link gate to the hog panels with my old friend, hay string. Then I tied a small tarp over it, Now they had a roof.

I kept Tinkerbelle fed and in an impromptu pen by unrolling wire in a semi circle, tied with…. You guessed it, hay string. I needed horse feed, fed her at 1:00, that gave 3 hours before I had to be back to feed her again. I put her in the dog crate in the house and left. I made several stops, got home at 3, fed Tinkerbelle and put her outside in the night pen to play with the lamb posse. She bounced, ran, catapulted, boing, boing, boing like a spring.

What’s this?

IMG_0624.jpeg

I brought out a bottle for her and she downed it. She followed me around while I did chores. It was getting dark, lambs went to their moms, Tinkerbelle found a suitable mom and snuggled down.

I picked her up and took her to the house. Tinkerbelle had a big day.

Whew! I've been crazy busy! It's a fog whiteout, I have to leave a 9 AM to take Buford to a vet clinic in Houston for either an AI collection or a breeding with a female Anatolian in heat. He usually shuts down and is a zombie when I take him away from the farm, so I hope he is interested enough in the female to get it done. I'll get a puppy out of this, and I desperately need another dog. In fact, I need 2 more.

I have neighbors from Switzerland, mother and 37 year old daughter, they will babysit Tinkerbelle for me. They adore her and have lots of fun with her.

So has B40 finally warmed up to her baby? Will she now allow the little one to suck, or do you have to tie her up and subdue her for each feeding? What a life you have! It exhausts me just to hear about one of your days!

Monday, 1-4-26 Freckles, registered ewe, had a freckled ewe lamb that looks just like her. One for the flock! She got a scrapie tag too.

I turned Specks and her two lambs out of the jug so I could make room for Freckles and her baby.

I put Tinkerbelle in the empty jug, it’s good for her to be outside.
You are a good lamb mamma! 😍

She finally decided to take care of her baby. Now she is being a good mom.

Yesterday was insane, even by my standards. Came home from Houston to a ewe that had a baby stuck in the exit door. I’ll post pictures later and the rest of the story!

Granny, way too fat, huge, grossly obese, I’ve been worried about her.

When I got home yesterday from Houston, Granny was in crisis. A big lamb was stuck in the exit door. I ran in and changed clothes, got a rope, halter, towel, long full arm gloves and ran to help her. She ran. I couldn’t catch her. I dumped feed in the trough, the ewes ran to eat it and Granny did too. I got a rope on her, then the halter and dragged her to a sturdy gate post.

There was one set of toes and a nose sticking out. I put on the gloves, reached in and popped the lamb’s head out. I pulled on the one leg. I tried to find the other leg, it was bent backwards and I couldn’t bring it to the front. I pulled on the one leg and the head, pulled some more and pulled some more. Finally I got the poor thing out. There was another lamb, smaller, same leg bent backwards, but it came out easily.

I got Granny and her lambs in a small pen, she absolutely refused the first born. Last year she rejected one, raised one. I didn’t fight with her this time. Poor lamb could barely stand up, then crumpled up.

I took the lamb inside and bottle fed her. Son came in and named her Mabelline because she has on eye makeup. ❤️ she was huge, twice the size of Tinkerbelle, and weighed a whopping 10 pounds.

Things went well at the vet clinic with Buford. Those silly people took him from me, I questioned that. They reassured me that livestock guardians guard the owner and Buford would do better if I wasn’t in the room.
Yeah, right. I smiled and let them take him. They came back pronto, he was in a room with closed door, growling at them. I could’ve told them that but FAFO!

Then they wanted to put a muzzle on him because he is a big guardian dog. I put it on him myself, but he looked at me with hurt eyes, so I took it off.

They might’ve had a lot of success with other dogs, but not my dog. The owner of the female wanted Buford collected and the semen inserted in the female. Supposedly the semen can be inserted further, with greater chance of more puppies.

Buford sat down. Nope. Not happening. I asked to take the dogs outside to the enclosed yard. Once outside, Buford took interest in the female, mounted her and I put the plastic sleeve over his man part and collected semen. Yes I really did that. I’m sure learning things I never knew before!
