Official TEG Poll : What type of Gardener are you?

I voted "Other" because I'm a container gardener in the city. Mine is a "Salad" garden with Tomatoes being the main crop. In my heyday I also planted a lot of lettuces, herbs, even a spaghetti squash (I got one small squash out of it and it was delicious :) ) and some edible flowers. Though...

    Sterilizing Old Potting Soil?

Thanks all! :) I appreciate the advice. I've been a member for a while, but the last two years have been very bad for gardening. :( Thanks again. I'll post back and let you all know how things progress. :)

    Sterilizing Old Potting Soil?

I've heard of sterilizing old potting soil. Do any of you do this? How? What's the whole process? I'm a container gardener (salad garden - tomatoes, herbs, greens, etc.) and I really don't have a lot of money to replace soil this year, plus it looks like we are going to have another cool...

    Has anyone done container carrots?

I am a container gardener and I like to companion garden. I've grown carrots in my containers with other plants (tomatoes, peppers, etc.). The first time I tried them (Dragon Carrot) it was GREAT! At first I was disappointed because I thought that they would have grown to harvest sooner, but...

CONTAINER GARDEN - PREPARING POTS FOR NEXT YEAR?

Don --- Thank you so much for sharing! :) What do you do at the end of the season? Do you dump out the old soil and disinfect the pots and then add fresh soil and amendments (the chicken and rabbit "stuff" :) ) and let nature take it's course over the winter? I live in a large city and rent...

CONTAINER GARDEN - PREPARING POTS FOR NEXT YEAR?

Thank you so much for your replies. :) I've been getting conflicting info. I've read/heard that the soil can be sanitized by "cooking" it (actually baking it in an oven), solarizing it (letting the soil "cook" in the sun), or by adding boiling water to the pots. Do any of these methods work...

CONTAINER GARDEN - PREPARING POTS FOR NEXT YEAR?

I've been Container Gardening since 2009. Each year my garden got bigger and BIGGER. :D Last year, we had 2 deaths in our family and a snow storm and this hindered and prevented me from really cleaning up and putting the pots away. The pots stayed out all winter exposed to the elements...

    Powdery Mildew

Just thought I would report back. :) So far, I've sprayed the plants heavily with the milk solution, even the ones that did not seem to have any mildew. Everything "looks" better, but I think the squash vines are kaput. :( I will probably spray with the baking soda solution later this week...

    Squash??? :(

My squash plant got hit with what I think is Powdery Mildew. I am a container gardener and so far I've only gotten 1 spaghetti squash. :( It's about 7 inches long, 11.5 inches around and green. While I was pruning the vine (which was dry and shrinking up) the vine broke and now I have no...

    Powdery Mildew

I'm new here, so I'm not totally sure of what's OK and what's not here. I need help regarding Powdery Mildew and I thought I would just join in with you all and see what happens. :) I'm a container gardener and for the first time this year decided to try growing spaghetti squash. Everything...

New Gardener- HELP - re: Seed Starting

Lisa - I truly feel your pain. All of my seeds started indoors failed last year. The first set, after about 4 weeks and the second set after about 6-8 weeks. This was about 30-40 or more at a time. :( I discovered the larger peat pots and those seemed to work better and I had about 8 pots...
