I just bought 'The Whole Seed Catalog from baker creek heirloom seeds' at tractor supply yesterday. I'm just getting my feet wet w/heirlooms. I'm increasingly interested in being able to self sustain. I also just got a book I ordered from amazon called "Herbal Antibiotics Natural Alternatives...
the dogs got their baths yesterday. it was 81 (today it's 39). dh hooked the water hose up to the garage sink so the delicate little babies could have a warm shower. I drive up & sam the 100# german shepherd has a big grin on his face as dh is hosing him down with warm water on the driveway...
no more store bought meat would be a wonderful thing.
my mother says 'NO, don't raise pigs' she says they stink & the neighbors are unhappy. I think I could raise two at a time with not too much stink. I could sell one to offset the cost of the other. I think.
it's always the hardest for those left behind. the great thing is when we have the confidence they are with our Heavenly Father. how hard it must be for you to lose them both so soon. sure sorry.
what incredible beauties. my first year has been less than stellar. today, I pulled my big pile of pole beans out from the barn where they have been for a month. I had to pull the vines because of a freeze that came in. I've been waiting for them to dry, but I pulled the pods off today...
I have big bags of baking soda. could I use that instead of baby powder? we didn't get him bathed today like we were supposed to & the cold comes in tomorrow.
this lady is charging $4.00/lb. that's very high. however, I'm willing to do it this one time just to see how we like it. it's just the two of us - but we like to share w/folks, so it'll spread a little farther.
I'm so excited. I'm getting bacon, ham, lard, pork chops, & a nice roast. this lady I buy raw milk from offered half a pig. I'm excited to taste it & see if I want to raise pigs for meat.
:welcome so glad you joined. trust me, there are some incredibly knowledgeable people on this site. they are the best folks you'll ever get to talk with. this is the place to be - no doubt.
long cold spell coming here on thurs. the nights will freeze for the foreseeable future. no precip. to speak of. ugh. I'm going to have to carry water to my chickens and goats for a few days. not fun.
I've got beans that I really don't know if they're viable or not. they're still on vines that have been stashed in the "shed" for a couple of weeks. the weather is beautiful for the next couple of days, so I'm going to see what I've got. I'm still hoping I've got enougt to send to bluejay...
I have thought and thought about putting the pretty poop directly on the beds, but, because it's easier to put in on the compost - that's where it goes.
marshall is right as usual - the cats, they're pretty clean guys. my nugget lays on the side of my pillow at night & I consider myself...
it has been overdue to clean out the goat shed & the chicken coop. the ice cold weather came in, Thanksgiving came in, company on Sat. & thus messy, smelly. today, I had a couple of hours & the weather was nice. got everybody's quarters back up to snuff & no stinking - except sam the dog. he...
we had a bunch of folks over for Thanksgiving. some we knew & some we didn't know so well (that's another story). we acquired a HUGE dog kennel & put our two dogs in prison for a day. they both sat looking on, from a little distance, but no barking, whining, or other bad behavior. sam did...
but bay, aren't you supposed to saut onions, bell pepper, & celery somewhere in this time line too? I think the big mystery to me about gumbo is the sequence of things going in & HOW to make a roux if the onions/pepper/celery are sauting. do you use file? how important is that?
steve, that...
I agree w/marshall. some really great sounding soups here. I think I will pass on the rattlesnake soup too. nyboy's escarole & bean soup - yum. would love to hear steve's more in-depth on his fish chowder. bay needs to give some highlights on making a good gumbo. I do fair - but i'm not...
i'm very much at the starting gate w/food production despite being not so young. I know so little about the growing and the preserving, so i'm still on that steep learning curve. I have these three big raised beds. i'm going to keep that footprint. I've got a good source of manure now with...
