You've got to dig up every single teeny piece of root there is :) Otherwise, it keeps coming back.
I just found out that I've got horseradish in my yard, next to my rhubarb. And I was going to order roots to plant !!! I've been here for 2 years, so this will be the third year it's gone...
Indeterminite tomato varieties are really just vines-- they keep growing, and growing. And yes, you can pinch off the tops when they're tall enough, as well as, of course, the suckers- to encourage growth to the fruits, and not more vines.
I wish I lived in an area with a longer season, I'm in...
Did you blanch them first,or pack them raw? I know that if you blanch or precook a bit, it takes some of the oxygen out of them, or some chemical reaction-thingy-whats-it, that makes them pack tighter. Packed raw, any veggie or fruit will seem to float up like that and look like you didn't...
I know it's a bit late to be looking, but I was in the hospital and recovering from surgery, so I'm behind a bit... And now I can't find a few seeds I would love to plant this year.
Mint-- any kind-- especially the different and unique
Lavendar-- any kind at all!!!
Lemongrass, lemon balm...
Very neat! I'm thinking of using those next year. Did you "roll your own" or use the wooden pot makers that I've seen in the Lehman's catalog ( which I'd happily pay 15 bucks for, if it works, and if they hold out like yours do!)
Wow, I never knew you could root tomato cuttings like other plants. Very cool. I've got some white tomatoes out on their vines ( in pots on the sunporch) waiting for me to seed them, so I can dry and save the seed. If there are any decent looking branches left on any of them ( it's been cold)...
Indeed it was. Of the 60 heirloom plants I started from seed, planted and attempted to nurture- I got ZERO tomatoes. The volunteers out of the other garden grew like weeds.
I love the idea too- which is why I'd like to incorporate it here! We don't need to worry about termites- since our gardens and beds are away from the house- we've got 5 1/2 acres here. Of course, on a house lot, or smaller area, it would be wise to watch out.
Thanks!!!! I don't have a bed for them to go into right now, so I will plan for next fall. For now, I'm cutting the dead growth back and mulching well ( and trying to get rid of the onions!!) I'll start building the new bed with this year's compost and add next year- and transplant it all...
When we bought our house early last year, we were told there was an established asparagus patch. Well, we found it after it was nearly "done" for the year, and got a nice little harvest this year as well. My problem with it ( same as with a lot of the perennial plants/trees/bushes etc here)...
If you really want a border of some kind around your raised bed, there's no need to spend much, if anything. All the suggestions here are great!! In my area, lots of folks use fallen trees, cut to length, and stacked/tied/ built almost log cabin style around beds. If you have areas where you...
I find myself super addicted to particular forums, blogs, websites.. then I go off and find myself drifting too. I always come back though!!!!!
I AM getting major gardening withdrawals now though. My gardens have been "done" for almost 2 months now, the chickens have cleaned and tilled...
I can't decide whether or not to get one. I haven't actually had a calendar in my house in years, and decided to order one from Seed Savers Exchange already-- so, not having used one in years, I'm not sure I can justify getting two! I can buy a lot of seeds with the money I'd spend on a...
