Now that's a garden!
I wish I could handle that much garden, but I'll have to stick to my 8 raised beds for now. That's all the weeding I can handle.

You're lucky. We are approaching drought status here. We just can't seem to get consistent rain. We got like 8 inches at once back in April and barely anything since.
Oh well, I have to mow the yard less at least.

I thought it was slugs too. I put out some beer traps - didn't catch a single slug! It's the pill bugs and ants that are eating everything.
I'm going to try some DE and an organic spray of some sort. I've worked too hard to build these beds and have beautiful strawberry plants just to have...
I never knew what rolly pollies ate - but apparently nice ripe strawberries are on the list. The ants are also taking a bunch of them.
I harvested 5 strawberries for myself yesterday and had to throw about 20 to the chickens (they were happy of course). I just can't seem to win. I put mulch...
I think hornworms are the early stages of a moth (not a butterfly). I have planted marigolds, basil and borage in my garden (I've read all repel hornworms and the moths that lay the eggs). So far I have found few of them and they have become chicken feed. :D
Are you supposed to remove the dirt around your onions to make them be bigger onions? One of my neighbors told me to spray away the dirt around the bulbs and it would make them grow bigger. I've never read this anywhere so I was wondering if any of you have heard of this?
Thanks,

Well even though they were covered my tomatoes were nipped (3 of them severly). All of my green beans and cucumbers will have to be replanted (they were covered). Some of my squash looks ok, some of it doesn't. Good thing I have more seeds but this sets me back 3 weeks!
No more frosts!

Well, I only covered mine with sheets or the frost covers you get at Lowe's. I don't know if that is better or worse than milk jugs. Oh well, I shall see in a few hours.
I still have my fingers crossed. :fl

We got a late frost last night. Our last frost is usually early March (official last frost date is March 17th).
When I left for work it was still dark and frosty so I left the garden covered. I'll have to see what damage I got when I get home tonight.
I may have to replant the cucumbers...
There are only corner braces in the one box. I decided after that box that they weren't needed. There is a 2x4 spanning the bottom of each box in the middle for support so the sides don't bow.
I get 3-6 inches of rain per month - in spurts. As you can see my "yard" is totally flat, so when...
I found plants for sale at my local garden center. They were between the peppers and the tomatoes.
But I've also seen seeds for sale in a couple of my seed catalogs also. I think both Johnny's and Burpee have them.
Hope that helps.
My local dirt/mulch place had a new blend this year. It was 1/3 reclaimed potting soil, 1/3 topsoil with horse manure, and 1/3 top soil (different top soil). It looked really good. I'm going to test it this weekend to see if I need to add anything to it. It cost $26 a yard.
I can't wait...
Pretty much, I think. This is my first attempt at onions, garlic and shallots. I planted them all in mid November. Hopefully they will be ready soon as I already have stuff planned to follow the onions!
I got 5 new raised beds made this weekend. All I need to do now is put the mulch down around them all and I'll be ready to plant. Hopefully I can get that done next Saturday so I can begin planting on Sunday. Whoopee!!!
My onions are looking good too.
First, does anyone know what reclaimed potting soil is? They sell it at the local dirt/rock center. I was considering put it in my raised garden beds and mixing with compost. These are new beds that are empty now. Would it need anything else - sand, peat, etc.?
I don't like the "garden...
I like the Vegetable's Gardener's Bible. I've found it very helpful. I also have a few books on Texas gardening that mention vegetable gardening, but I usually go to the Gardener's Bible first to look something up.
I just wanted to add that a book I found very helpful was "The Vegetable Garderners Bible". It has tons of good info in it and gives you growing info for lots of different veggies.
I'm on my 4th year as a vegetable gardener and I am still learning.

I just planted a batch of garlic a few days ago. It probably depends mostly on where you live. I live in zone 8b - and the time to plant it is now.
I say try it if you have the space.
