Brandywine, Southern Night, German Red Tomatoes

So this year is my first serious attempt at gardening. Been having chicken and composting for 2 years so that helped. My tomatoes grow really decent, most are just Home Depot varieties, but I did pick up 3 heirloom plants from a local garden club: - Brandywine Red: more flavorful than Ace...

    Feeding tomatoes with rotten egg

Thanks everyone for helpful ideas! Now I am not familiar with the eggshells and vinegar thing. Can you please elaborate? You actually water the plant with vinegar? And yes my tomatoes are teasing me too. So many fruit but still all green, except for may be 1-2 that are "blushing". I live...

    Feeding tomatoes with rotten egg

OK so I understand that it's good to feed eggshell to tomatoes as calcium supplement. I have an egg that I left out in extreme heat for a few days so I don't want to eat it. If I just crush it under a tomato plant, yoke and all, does it serve any purpose? Or should I break it in the chicken...

    Compost Not Cooking

From my little experience, my compost pile never heat up unless I add some fresh chicken poo. I don't know if your horse manure is supposed to do the same thing. But ... if you leave it long enough, or turn it regularly, your pile will eventually become composted. Another thought: when I...

    Using a chipper/shredder

So I just bought a second-hand Craftman 5HP chipper/shredder. Works pretty good. The only thing is the output chute shoots out stuff and blowing out air so strongly it just blows away all the shredded leaves and twigs. Does anyone has a trick that can contain the output products so I don't...

Leaf Lettuce - direct sowing or transplant?

I bought a combo seed pack of 7 different leafy lettuces online. I planted them in 7 small rows about 2 months ago, in a new raised bed. 6 of them came out OK but not great. I think because the plants are too close together. A friend of mine mentioned that she planted all lettuces indoor and...

    Peeing into the compost pile

Thanks everyone for your input. Yes I love those worms and don't want to disturb them too much. But I don't like to bucket idea, so I will spray the pile with water before and after the act, hopefully dilute it a little. Texan - the only way that worked for me to heat up the pile is layering...

    Peeing into the compost pile

OK with all the talks about the benefit of urine, should I start peeing into the compost pile? I wouldn't do it directly on the vegetables, but compost pile will have time to dissipate all the odor. (sorry ladies for the grossness - I'm really interested in learning!)

Should I feed the chicken or throw to the compost pile?

The counter argument is that feeding the scraps to the compost pile I'll have more worms. Right now with the chickens and rabbits, I have absolutely nothing left for the worms - even melon rings and orange peels. I don't know if the scraps help reduce consumption of pellets. My chickens are...

Should I feed the chicken or throw to the compost pile?

I have a chicken run with 4 hens and about 10 rabbits right now. All kitchen scrap have been going to the chicken run. Whatever the hens refuse the rabbits will eat them up. Occasionally throwing some grass clipping in there. And hay. The problem is doing this I have nothing to feed the...
