anyone ever SUCCESSFULLY controlled star-nosed moles?

Pat... FYI Years ago I remember an old timer that lived up the street with a huge garden told me that you could chew up some "Juicy fruit" chewing gum and drop it in the burrow and the moles would eat it. He said it bound up their digestive system and eventually killed them. Something about the...

    Trees and Soil Update HELP!!!!!!!

Heavy clay is a bear. I do not recomend adding soil ammendments as it can create a "bathtub" effect and drown out the roots. I once killed an apple tree that way. I added peat and good topsoil thinking it would give it a good start... wrong. I would (and will as I plan to put in two cherry...

anyone ever SUCCESSFULLY controlled star-nosed moles?

Brings back visions of Bill Murray and his war on gophers in the movie "Caddyshack" :gig Star moles... Hate em'. With voles or other types of moles I just drive over the run with my truck when the yard dries out and I have had some success eliminating them. Star moles not a chance. You can't...

    My new lettuce gutters!

Very innovative idea. May have to steal that one. I have some material similar to gutters but just slightly deeper. Would be handy to attach them to the side of the chicken coop and keep a good supply of lettuce growing all summer to feed me AND the chickens. Coolest part is no bending for...

    Rye flour... Question

All the other flour that I have stored was kept in the freezer for three or four days then packaged in airtight food grade containers. I then store them in a closet in the coolest room in the house. I will do the same with this. Thanks.

    Rye flour... Question

Well after checking for the nearest whole foods store I found it is in Chicago. 100 miles from here. I did find a natural food store in Kalamazoo that stocked small thirty ounce bags so I bought all they had (4) @ $2.00 per lb. Kind of pricey but it is labeled "organic" hence the markup...

    Rye flour... Question

I have been to three different grocery stores and none of them carry rye flour. I finally found a recipe for the german caraway rye bread I grew up on and now I can't find the flour to make it. Anyone else have the same problem. Looks like I am going to have to spend a day calling all the...

    Care of wooden handles

This thread is the closest to answering a question I have. Forgive me if it seems as if I am hijacking it. My old rolling pin finally gave up the ghost with a large crack the length of it. I replaced it with a new hardwood pin (appears to be hickory) and I am concerned about preserving it...

Strawberries, Butternut squash, and Yellow Zuchini

I always plant "extra" seeds just in case some don't germinate. Pick the healthiest of the two and plant it then uproot the other. All you lost was one seed.

Is using pressure treated wood bad for raised beds?

I used pressure treated landscape timbers when I first moved here. (1991) Over the last three years I had to tear them all out as they eventually rotted. (they lasted about 15 years) Now I use stone, brick, or concrete block. Stone don't rot. JMHO

plans to make a roadside stand

Chickie... The nieghbor of a friend of mine (he is retired) grows a large crop of tomatoes and other veggies. He built a small garden stand mounted on a trailer. Every day after harvesting he loads up the stand with all the produce his family can't use and parks it at the end of his driveway...

    Building a greenhouse!

Would seem to me the steep roof pitch is probably necessary to prevent snow from accumulating on the roof. Heavy wet snow needs to be able to slide off easily to prevent tearing or streatching of the plastic or a possible roof collapse. Honestly I am only guessing as I have never owned one.

That is good to know. I think I will give it a try this summer. Unless someone chimes in that it would be a total waste of time. Thanks.

    Tator Tower Experiment UPDATE

I have two stone beds that I built last year and I filled them both with clippings. They have sat now all winter covered with snow. My concern is that when I pull back the top layer of clippings there appears to be a milky white dusty coating on the clippings below. Mold maybe? Just a natural...
