anyone ever SUCCESSFULLY controlled star-nosed moles?

You can't even flood them out because their burrows seem to go on forever. The one time I tried I had the hose right in the burrow for hours and never saw water exit.

I will say, the parts of the yard where the moles have heavily colonized do seem to be flooding a LOT less than they have in past years (Seriously).

Sigh.

I suppose with so many of them in this area -- judging by what everyone ELSE'S road ditches and front yards/pastures look like -- killing them would probably do no good anyhow as they'd prolly just recolonize.

They sure as heck better not get near the septic field though... :/

Pat... FYI Years ago I remember an old timer that lived up the street with a huge garden told me that you could chew up some "Juicy fruit" chewing gum and drop it in the burrow and the moles would eat it. He said it bound up their digestive system and eventually killed them. Something about the wad of gum resembling the grubs they feed on.
I never tried it myself because where I lived back then I didn't garden.
Since poisen isn't an option it might be worth a try.

Lighthawk, I've heard that same "cure" for gophers!
Good thing it doesn't work that way on people, I hate to think of all the Juicy Fruit I swallowed when I was a kid, and we weren't allowed to chew gum at school... back in the day...

If we had swallowed a chunk half the size of our stomach it might have had a different outcome.

I tried the Juicy Fruit method a couple of years ago in my yard. It worked. I still have some, so it did not totally eradicate them, but there are noticably less of them.

I don't think they were star-nosed though - I don't think we get them down this way. I can see the tunnels they dig bulging in my yard.

We don't have many moles in the Panhandle, but we've got pocket gophers...same aggravation, diffeent Latin name.

One year I was sitting on my deck enjoying the view of some freshly planted phlox when I noticed one was wiggling. And then it disappeared. One of those darned gophers jusr sucked it straight down! Really didn't know whether to laugh or cry. And, yeah, the rest of the plants met the same fate over the rest of the day.
