I got 4 gorgous seed catalogs today:
Seed Savers Exchange
Johnny's
Pinetree
& Baker Creek
I am drooling over all the wonderful veggies. It is a comfort on a snowy, icy day.
LESA- Awesome news about your honey.
I am signed up for a bee keeping class in January in Indianapolis. They will help us assemble our hives and select our bees. I cannot WAIT!
What kind of bees do you have?
OOOO, I didn't think about the heat factor. Maybe if I add some row covers I can have fresh lettuce in January..... Wouldn't that be a good way to start off the New Year's diet resolution?
Will do. I hope it all comes together. With this nutty real estate market-who knows, but the property is PERFECT.
I was out there on Friday, the sun was just over the top of the far hill, the mist was rising off the pond and a flock of wild turkeys came out of the woods. It was so peaceful.
lesa- that was my thought exactly. I realize that I may have to dig them up, but at least I can move the dirt!
I was also thinking that the sewer may help with fertilizer!
The other good news is that I can GREATLY expand my flock of chickens. Now I can get all the cool breeds that I have...
WOW! what an awesome set up.
You have everything that most long for- garden, chickens and bees.
In addition to this website, check out backyard chickens. It completely rocks too.
I also love Edward Smith's, WORD method of gardening. It is a great read as well as reference. Best of Luck...
My hubby and & I seriously considering buying a new place in the country. I finally will have room for a SUBSTANTIAL garden.
The only issue is- the ideal location for levelness, sunlight, etc, is over the sewage drainfield.
I do a raised bed method with no-till, so I won't be digging down...
Thanks Hoodat- That sounds awesome. I appreciate you sharing all your knowledge. The internet is such a great tool. With you in CA and me in IN, we would never have a chance to communicate otherwise!
I got worried about frost, which of course, didn't happen and now have a lot of green cayenne peppers. Does any one have any ideas on what I could do with them? Will they ever turn red like tomatos do?
Mother Earth News has a great aritcle about planting peach trees from the stones. I think it was the Aug/Sep issue? I bought some peaches from locally grown trees and dried the stones so I will try this myself.
Good Luck!
Ladyhawke- That hive is just the absolute coolest thing that I have seen. I LOVE it.
Wish I had the $$$ to buy it. I have to go a little cheaper or else I will never get my hive. :/
Thanks Journey.
I will look into the seed train. Are there instructions on how it works?
I did go to a local store to get my seeds that supposedly only stocks what grows best here, but maybe it was my inexperience.
Thanks Wifezilla on the tomatos. I LOVE maters, but can't find that...
This is very helpful thread.
I made my first foray into heirlooms this season and am about to give up.
My peppers (California Yellow Wonder) look beautiful, but only produced stunted, tiny fruit. The brandwine is also very low producing. Cherokee Purple has a few very large tomatos...
I feel like I have cheated because my hybrids have done better than the heirlooms. :/
I really wanted to get to where I can harvest my own seeds, but gosh darn it, those beautiful hybrids are so seductive.
Where oh where do you get chocolate tomatos?
