I've had trouble with peppers in past years so I tried something new this year -- EPSON SALTS. I mixed some of the epson salts in with the soil in the hole before I planted the pepper plant. My plants are just now starting to produce, and the plants themselves are gorgeous. Another thing is...
This might help. I just posted this in the 'Compost' category, but I'll put it here as well:
I got this from the book 'Great Garden Fix-Its.'
This has to do with making a compost bin/pile and the CARBON-to-NITROGEN radio you should have is 30-1.
CARBON...

It says you should have a CARBON-to-NITROGEN radio of 30-1.

I'm going to be planting carrots in an 8 ft. x 3 ft. section of the garden. To make it easier to deal with those teeny tiny carrot seeds and not have to worry about thinning later, I made these seed tapes. By the way, you can use the same method with a lot of different seeds.
Cut 1" wide...

I'm in Twin Cities, 4b.
Slowly but surely, I'm getting my garden in; but, the drought and sandy soil sure isn't helping. Plus, they are predicting 54 degrees on Saturday and then a few days in the 60's. This cool weather is nice for 'us' but NOT our garden plants that we're trying...
As we all know, tomato cages just don't cut it, especially when we're dealing with indeterminate tomato varieties.
So, I went to my nearby Lowe's to buy some wooden stakes to support my tomato plants as they grow 'IN' the cages. I even put in 5 nails, at different spacings, in each stake to...
I'm not growing the pole beans by my corn as I'm growing all my beans on a vertical trellis. However, I am going to grow 'Pumpkin Pie' pumkins in the corn patch.
As my fellow Minnesotans will testify, everything is bone dry here from lack of rain. Every time they call for rain, it doesn't happen.
I am going to start 'planting' tomorrow; and, since I had read that the preferred way of gardening in the dry southwest part of the country is 'recessed,' I'm...
Last week, I started buying a few bags of red mulch at my nearby Wal-Mart, and it was $3.48/bag. Today, I was at a Wal-Mart in a different burb, and they had the SAME bags of red mulch for "$2.33."
I've never tried this myself (so far;) but, I have read that you can use dried beans from the supermarket after first letting them take root wrapped in damp paper towels in an open plastic bag. You read about this in a lot of the 'TIPS/HINTS' gardening books.
This is the first time I picked up a plant of Lemon Verbena at the nursery the other day; and, W O W, it really does smell EXACTLY like lemon!!
I'll be using the leaves when I make sun tea this summer.
This plant is a perennial in hot climates, and I'm in Zone 4b; so, it's used as an...
I live in MN. The house is a bi-level where the lower level is heated just like the upper level; and, of course, the garage FREEZES. I really have NO place to store canning jars. I would love to start canning; but, under these circumstances, I FREEZE everything in those Reynolds's...
I'm in Minnesota and have never had any trouble with cutworms (keeping fingers crossed;) but I did plan on using matches anyway.
My question is can you use regular matches rather than the wooden matches?
Greensage45:
Out of the tomato plants I bought at the nursery, I did get 4 Brandywines.
I WILL post pictures of my garden (at least try;) but, it will be a while before I've got anything to show since I'll just be planting next weekend.
Since I'm in Zone 4b, I'll be tilling/amending/planting my garden over the Memorial Day weekend.
I did start seeds, but the tomatoes and peppers didn't come up, so I had to buy plants from the nursery. However, I've got beautiful plants (from seed) of (12) cucumber plants (regular and...
This is what "I" did! I put gutters (CHEAP) on two sides of my backyard shed; bought two 32-gal., plastic, garbage cans (CHEAP) and put them in the BACK of the shed (so they were not an unsightly item;) and, found 'flexible' downspouts to go FROM the gutters INTO the garbage cans.
