Heading over to the dark side folks!

Well, I have done it. We are getting two chickens this weekend or sometime next week. They are one year olds, one RIR and one red sex link. We are really excited. Now I have to go out and get the chicken wire up and clean out the old chicken house. Have 30 fuzzy butts ordered for the end of...

    Twins!

Wow. that is really cool!! I purposely let some of the zukes get big because I like to make bread with them. Or main dishes. I love the small ones for eating raw. Or sliced length ways and grilled. Remember to leave the skin on your zukes when eating raw especially. That is where all the...

Thanks for the garlic tip Tutter, I am planning on garlic and have been pouring over the seed catalogs. I would like to put in a lot as we use a lot of garlic. Now my problem is that all my 12 raised beds are full and I don't have anything ready to move out. :( I will have to wait until my...

New Here! Wanted to say hi!

Welcome. Lots of BYC people here. Be sure to check out your local library. One great book is "the Four Season Harvest". I am jealous you live in great all year round garden territory. With some planning you can eat from your garden all year long.

First time making Jam! 5 pics.

OEGBman, I second bluerose's comment. Learning form our elders is more priceless than words. It is amazing that there is such a serge of "back to basics" going on with these times we live in. I think too many people are realizing that the old ways are much more earth friendly. If everyone grew...

What did you can (freeze, dehydrate, preserve) today?

Last night I made 7 quarts of sugar free strawberry jam. Not as pretty colored as the jam made from sugar but turned out really yummy and only about 10 calories per tablespoon. I used splenda and low/no sugar pectin. Now I just need to find the time to do up another 30 or so lbs of berries that...

Who asked about using mint? Ice Cream!

I use only a table salt size-in fact, I just buy cheapo table salt. The scrubs in the fancy stores are of this same size. Not a rock salt type size or sea salt. The oil just absorbs easily into the salt. Kind of like adding water to sand. If you can imagine wet sand being rubbed on your skin. In...

    Romain questions

Thanks so much for all your suggestions and help. In the "grand Scheme" of things, lettuce bolting is the least of my worries. It is all about perspective. :D At least that is what i keep telling myself at my sad, non producing tomatoes. I will do more research before I plant next year and I...

    Green beans/preserving

I personally think they are much better frozen than canned. You blanch them and freeze them just like your toms. I would check on the internet for the exact time to blanch. I do it by color, not time. I think canned green beens are so bland.

    Question on corn.

So I only pull off pieces form the end, not the whole ear of corn?:idunno Edited to say: I am really clueless when it comes to corn. The tassel is the thing that develops out of the top of the plant or the end of each corn with the hair on it?

    Question on corn.

Well, silly me. I planted two different areas of corn. Both before I started reading here on TEG. That is when I read that corn should not be planted in long rows. :barnie Well I planted one block of corn in a raised bed and about 15 feet away I had some extra space and I planted two long rows...

    Romain questions

Thanks so much for the info. What would you suggest for shade? Can I use my raised bed and just make a little "tent" like thing? My lettuce was sharing a bed with carrots, peppers and some onion. I also have a ruffled red variety of lettuce that is standing and another bed of a soft leaf type...

Who asked about using mint? Ice Cream!

Another use for mint. Has anyone ever made a salt or sugar scrub? It is the best. You take salt or sugar(i prefer salt) and add dollar store baby oil or any baby oil you prefer. Mix in enough baby oil to soak into the salt and make it sort of spreadable. Not too oily mind you. Enough oil so you...

    Another Herb question.

I can't seem to find this info but I do have several books on back order at the library regarding veg gardening.:tools Anyway. This is my first year to grow herbs. My basil was started from seed. It is a smaller average variety. Will it just keep growing as long as it has enough room and I...

darn it! what did I do wrong?

As it has been said, don't throw any canning attempt away if it looks weird or did not seal. As long as you have JUST processed it, it will be edible. I always expect a jar or so out of a few batches of jam won't seal. I just count on it to use right away. Same with veggies. Same with veggies...
