2020 Little Easy Bean Network - An Exciting Adventure In Heirloom Beans !

I'm so far behind in this thread, but today is my catch-up day (since we're stuck inside because of all the wildfire smoke). I am curious, Russ, how you manage disease when planting in the same locations every year? (I'm planning for next year's garden and was trying to plan in some crop...

2020 Little Easy Bean Network - An Exciting Adventure In Heirloom Beans !

Okay, another totally random bean question for the bean people. ;) I got ahold of a couple Phaseolus vulgaris varieties from Central/South America, which have some of the prettiest seedcoats I've ever seen. I planted some last year and got nothing back, but last year was such an awful bean year...

2020 Little Easy Bean Network - An Exciting Adventure In Heirloom Beans !

Interesting! She's on the peninsula in Washington state, which is typically damp and cool; but maybe the temps were higher this year than normal. Pollination was my first guess, but then I second-guessed myself, with the assumption that if the blossom didn't pollinate, the plant either...

2020 Little Easy Bean Network - An Exciting Adventure In Heirloom Beans !

I had someone pose a bean question just now that I don't know the answer to, but I figured you guys would! :) She is a Master Gardener but not much of a bean person. She grew scarlet runners this year, and started picking crunchy-dried pods today to save the seeds -- and there aren't mature...

2020 Little Easy Bean Network - An Exciting Adventure In Heirloom Beans !

I need to sit down and catch up with this thread from beginning to end -- just finished moving for the second time this year! (Got my network beans in big pots and they will probably be the most well-traveled beans of 2020, lol). But I was searching for info on how Russ sets up his bean poles...

2019 Little Easy Bean Network - Come And Reawaken The Thrill Of Discovery

The Falcon I grew last year (via Tricia77, who I think got them from Russ originally) was itty-bitty in pretty much every way. Itty-bitty seeds, itty-bitty pods, itty-bitty plant. It got kinda shaded out by the larger bush beans around it, but all of the plants were easily under a foot tall and...

All right, will do. I'm glad that it wasn't just me with the bad bean year, at least.

2019 Little Easy Bean Network - Come And Reawaken The Thrill Of Discovery

Finally caught up with the end of the thread! *whew* If there's something I haven't been behind on this year, I don't know what it is. I grew out six LEBN varieties this year, with mixed results. Which was pretty disappointing after last year's resounding successes, but... I guess that's a good...

2019 Little Easy Bean Network - Come And Reawaken The Thrill Of Discovery

Russ, when are you leaving for Florida (and/or when do you need the beans mailed by)? Planning to get the rest of my beans sorted this weekend.

2019 Little Easy Bean Network - Come And Reawaken The Thrill Of Discovery

Man this season was bad. Especially compared to last year, which for me at least was magical. Last year I only grew 4 plants of any given pole bean, and got 1+ pounds off at least 5 or 6 of them. This year...... gak.

2019 Little Easy Bean Network - Come And Reawaken The Thrill Of Discovery

Did you get purple-streaked pods off this? Every time I've grown it (this year and the past two years) the seed has looked exactly the same, with zero off-types, but I've gotten pods that turn purple-streaked right toward the end. But the original grower said she never got those purple-streaked...

I've never actually grown them, but I have a pack of 2018 seed from Baker Creek and would be happy to send you some. Might be fun to run a test crop next to whatever you harvest from this year! :)

2019 Little Easy Bean Network - Come And Reawaken The Thrill Of Discovery

Galloway and Frost both grew as semi-runners for me this year; I did start them late, but honestly I think it was just a crap year for beans in this neck of the woods.

I have Benishibori that I'm growing out this year; I'll send you some! At least it's *a* Benishibori; but it's such an unusual name I can't imagine there's more than one. It's a red and white speckled-y bush bean.

2019 Little Easy Bean Network - Come And Reawaken The Thrill Of Discovery

I presprouted all my bean seeds last year, and I'm planning to do it again this year. It was kind of an experiment, but I feel like the pros outweighed the cons by the end of the season. I used those 2-lb salad mix tubs, with 2 wet dishtowels (one below the beans and one above), and kept the...

2019 Little Easy Bean Network - Come And Reawaken The Thrill Of Discovery

Thanks for posting the bush beans! I think I'm finally decided... Network Beans: Galloway; Frost; Schoko Flecken; Lila Stuart; Ojibwe Black; and Night Star if you have it (it looked like it was on the website as 2013 seed, but let me know if I should pick something else). Extras: Buxton...
