The rolly pollies (pill bugs) and ants are eating all my strawberries!

I never knew what rolly pollies ate - but apparently nice ripe strawberries are on the list. The ants are also taking a bunch of them. I harvested 5 strawberries for myself yesterday and had to throw about 20 to the chickens (they were happy of course). I just can't seem to win. I put mulch...

    Onion question

Are you supposed to remove the dirt around your onions to make them be bigger onions? One of my neighbors told me to spray away the dirt around the bulbs and it would make them grow bigger. I've never read this anywhere so I was wondering if any of you have heard of this? Thanks, aee96

We got a late frost :(

We got a late frost last night. Our last frost is usually early March (official last frost date is March 17th). When I left for work it was still dark and frosty so I left the garden covered. I'll have to see what damage I got when I get home tonight. I may have to replant the cucumbers...

I'm almost ready. (large pics inside - sorry to the dialup people)

I got 5 new raised beds made this weekend. All I need to do now is put the mulch down around them all and I'll be ready to plant. Hopefully I can get that done next Saturday so I can begin planting on Sunday. Whoopee!!! My onions are looking good too.

    Reclaimed potting soil

First, does anyone know what reclaimed potting soil is? They sell it at the local dirt/rock center. I was considering put it in my raised garden beds and mixing with compost. These are new beds that are empty now. Would it need anything else - sand, peat, etc.? I don't like the "garden...

    My onion farm.

Well since that is pretty much all I have growing at the moment I'm calling it the onion farm. I planted about 100-125 onion sets, some shallots and a few garlic cloves about 2 months ago (can't remember exactly - I'm going to start keeping track from now on). Well today I planted another 60...

How cold hardy are onions, garlic and shallots?

How cold would it have to get to require me to cover up my onions, garlic and shallots? They are about 4-6 inches tall. I live in South Central Texas and we really dont' get a lot of cold weather but we do occassionally dip down to freezing overnight. Can they handle a few hours below...

When would be the correct time to plant onion seeds for South Texas?

I am in zone 8b and would like to try onions. Most of what I have read seems to indicate that onions do better from seed. So do I plant them now or wait until early spring? This will be my first attempt at onions. I'm hoping it works out, I'm going to try and grow all my own ingredients for...

    My squash looks pitifull

I planted squash (both zucchini and yellow) from seeds and started plants about 3.5 weeks ago and they look sad. Haven't grown much and the leaves are yellowy-green. What are they needing? The bed was new this year. They are raised beds 10 inches deep. I filled them with half reclaimed...

    Does anyone have spaghetti gourds?

My mom said my grandmother always grew spaghetti gourds when they were young. So I've been looking for them so I can grow them. My mother said they are long and skinny. My mother has a dried one that is probably nearly 30 years old (of course no seeds). I really want to find a few seeds...

What's a good way to keep bugs from eating my strawberries!

My strawberries have just started producing (I have about 12 plants). Well I turned over one of my almost ripe strawberries and saw that the bottom had been eaten! Would DE work to keep the bugs away? Or is there a good organic type spray I could use? I want to eat these berries so I really...

I want to grow tomatoes for making salsa? What kind of tomato is best? I want good flavor and not too watery (I like my salsa a little thick). Any suggestions? Thanks, aee96
