Chickens or Rabbits. Which to raise and eat?

I do both! If done correctly from the beginning, setting up for both doesn't make any bigger of a footprint on your land than setting up for one or the other by itself. Rabbit hutches can hang from a PVC or metal frame, and chickens walk on the ground underneath. I like chickens because I like...

To pinch or not pinch strawberry blossoms..Here's my answer...

Being the analytical thinker that I am, I experimented! I planted strawberries and pinched half of them and didn't pinch the other half. The pinched ones of course did not produce the first year, but have produced like wildfire since then! Easily twice what the non-pinched ones produce each...

Tomatoes still green, but it will freeze tonight - what to do?

Well I covered them in heavy plastic, so we'll see what happens! Unfortunately I don't like any green tomato recipies, so I either have to get them ripe (and preferably larger), or throw the whole bush to the chickens. If I need things I can do with half-frozen tomatoes I'll let you know tomorrow.

Tomatoes still green, but it will freeze tonight - what to do?

I knew my tomatoes were taking a loooong time to produce, but now it may be too late! I have one tomato plant that is just HUGE. It turned into a BUSH. And there are dozens and dozens of small green tomatoes on it. Some look about to turn red, others are still tiny and won't be ripe for a...

    Compost maker

Yes, rice and pastas are fine. Pretty much if it isn't solid meat and isn't pure dairy, I put it in my compost pile. All veggies, all fruit, bones (like from boiled chicken), veggie soup (even with beef broth), eggshells, burned pancakes, stale/moldy bread, leftover mac-and-cheese, leaves I...

How long do store-bought seeds keep?

These are corn seeds. The package says they sprout in 7 - 10 days. But it's day 12. If they're not sprouting by Saturday I'll plant on top of them, and thin out the weakest if these do sprout later. Thanks for the idea, I appreciate it.

How long do store-bought seeds keep?

I just realized when I planted my garden that I used old seeds. Probably purchased about three years ago. I thought the packages looked wrong when I got them out, but I figured I had simply forgotten what I purchased. But no, I was using old packages I had forgotten I had. So, is my corn likely...

    Finally my garden is PLANTED!

boggybranch - I live in Colorado, above 7,000 feet. Our traditional last frost date is May 15, and it went right up to that this year. Beekissed - where will I find that thread? This is the first I've heard about it, but it sounds like a cool idea!

    Finally my garden is PLANTED!

I've been waiting a while to be able to say that! It kept freezing... Anyway, it's all finished. For the first time I am doing the no-dig "lasagna" method of gardening, and did it using compost from my own pile. I'm excited to see how each of those do! I planted garlic, onions...

New here - I'm making a no-dig garden for vegetables!

Hi! I probably know some of you from the BackYardChickens and SelfSufficiency sites, but this is my first time over here. I live in Colorado, where there are lots of weeds and little water. So now that I've decided to have a large vegetable garden, I figured I might need some help! I've...
