    Any spreaders for TALL people?

Not that I'm super-tall - I'm about 6'1" - but I've been using the same Scotts spreader for a few years, and each time I swear I want to throw it onto a freeway* and watch it get crushed. Are there any that are made for people taller than five feet? thanks! * I'd never do this, plus, I don't...

    Droopy Salvia...

Thanks Thistlebloom & Mary! That's good news. Mary, I didn't replant - I figured posting a pic here could provide information that wasn't carried in what I wrote, so, success there, I suppose! I definitely don't like the falling stems... if I put a stake in the center (the thin bamboo kind) &...

    Droopy Salvia...

Hi Thistlebloom - I'm not sure about the drainage - there are only a few grasses and flowers there now, but they've done fine. Perhaps I should raise it up a bit? Had some heavy rain yesterday / last night... It's not looking too good :(

    Droopy Salvia...

Thanks - I am able to hand-dig the mixture, but didn't add manure to the mix. I'll pull it out & re-plant. The soil is fairly compacted (before digging) but I can't really loosen up the whole area - the instructions said to dig a hole twice the diameter of the roots, so I followed those...

    Droopy Salvia...

Hi everyone, I picked up a salvia (nemorosa "Snow Hill") the other day, and planted it the next, following directions to dig a larger hole, use soil conditioner, water, etc. That same evening it looked "droopy" - I thought it was the weight of the water; the stems were spreading like they did...

New here - big identification project! Need lots of help...

So... Eight years later. The yard has been through a lot, and not necessarily for the better! We've lost that big beautiful Bradford Pear, 2 out of 3 Eouynomus alata, had a few more things die off here and there :( Also removed all the bushes around the deck as they'd become all gangly and...

Guide to trees by height/width/zone ?

LOL... yes, typing fast. Plus, I'm hungry... Thanks, going to fix it.

Guide to trees by height/width/zone ?

Thanks for the comprehensive answer! I really do appreciate it and read it twice. That said... had I known/been able to do research in the past, I would have made some different choices; for example, I would not plant a Bradford Pear (thanks thistlebloom!) again, because, simply put, they break...

Guide to trees by height/width/zone ?

Thanks, but did you read what I wrote? The whole reason for my post was to be able to do some research...

Guide to trees by height/width/zone ?

Hi Thistlebloom! I'll take a look at the Arbor Day site. As far as the roots go - yes, girdling roots, unfortunately, and it's a tree that was tilted in a big windstorm a few years ago and has been doing worse each year. I lopped a 3-4" limb that was hitting the side of the house, and it was...

Guide to trees by height/width/zone ?

Hi everyone, Another springtime and I'm once again planning to do more than I seem able to actually get myself to do during "yard season" :) However, picking trees that others are planting is always a bit more... efficient. So, a couple things I'm planning: 1) Trees on part of the open yard...

Help! Newly planted tree wilting a bit

Follow up... it died. Bores. Landscape place replaced with a smaller but much healthier tree... with a small bark split at the base :( There was no guarantee on the first one so I'm happy, new one is doing well so far.

    Stop pesky grasses in beds?

This sounds like it - nutsedge.... I found what looked like grapes growing under the soil. Bad grapes.

Where to buy sedge in NJ?

Morning everyone, Well... I'll definitely take a closer look/read before doing anything "drastic". @baymule , do you mean the stuff growing rogue in my beds from the other post? I didn't know that's sedge, but it's certainly not growing like the article seems to indicate. That said, maybe I...

    Stop pesky grasses in beds?

Hi all... lol @ animals, sounds fun but these are just small ornamental beds... :) No edible stuff here, will likely pull then spray, though I like the boiling water approach. I just don't want to kill the ornamentals (which are also grasses...) I usually wear gloves when pulling, the somewhat...

Where to buy sedge in NJ?

Ironically (based on my other "getting rid of grasses in beds" thread) I'd like to use sedge to fill others. I just read an article linked by a friend here, and I really like the idea, but am not sure I'd know where to start looking. I live in Southern NJ. thanks, Andrew

    Stop pesky grasses in beds?

That's pretty much it... seems like every time I pull weeds, something else pops up, but the grasses just seem to multiply. What's the standard procedure for managing these things? I cannot imagine that it's pulling them, because there are, like, 4,000...

Help! Newly planted tree wilting a bit

Ok - looks like a simple very low flow (i.e. drip) hose did the trick! Tree is looking much better. Thanks everyone.

Thanks! This certainly helps put my mind at ease. Is a drip hose preferable?

Help! Newly planted tree wilting a bit

Hi all, A few weeks ago we had a new maple put in. The maple is about 20ft high, the trunk about 3 inches across. When put in, it had a watering ring installed, which, I've just found out, didn't work very well. Looks like it went maybe 3 days without watering. At first, it had a few wilty...
