The lawn is moving with larva.........

Armyworms. That is what those nasty buggers are. Western NY is having a major issue with them right now. Most likely eggs were laid in fields and once they march through fields, they move onto the next piece of property. Our property borders a large field of wheat. The pesticide we put...

The lawn is moving with larva.........

Of course, I can't figure out how to add pictures of the infestation. Hubby dumped about 100 lbs of some Ortho dust. I know, I know. The birds, other bugs and anything else that might make their way through the powder. My 13 chickens wouldn't have made a dent in the population. And we don;t...

The lawn is moving with larva.........

When we spray or dust, the chickens will not be let out. They are on the other side of the house, quite far away from the dust. We have 19 acres and about 3 or 4 acres is lawn. They don't usually go to that side of the yard, but we can keep them penned until it is safe.

The lawn is moving with larva.........

That is what we were thinking upon further research. We're just going to need a lot of it. The way these things are moving, hopefully it'll get them before they get the entire side yard. Thinking about unleashing my 13 hens, but it just creeps me out the amount of larva they might eat. No...

The lawn is moving with larva.........

I believe I have a massive infestation of Fiery Skipper Larva. The Google pics that came up matched the things in our lawn. The lawn is literally crawling with them. They have probably gone through a half acre or so. The lawn is just about brown and dead where they have marched forward. I...

    Black walnut trees & tomatoes

When I first put in my veggie garden, I didn't know about the walnut tree/tomato thing. Figured it out when I lost all my tomato plants. They just died!! I put the tomatoes at the other end of the garden the next year.

    Mushy pickles?

I tried dill last year. This year I bought Ball's pre-packaged pickling spices. All you have to add is vinegar. I'm at work right now, but I'll check the package to see what acidity of vinegar they ask for. I bought sweet and dill. Maybe we need to ask the Claussen people as to what their...

    Mushy pickles?

I tried my hand at pickling cucumbers last year, but they turned out mushy. I don't want to make the same mistake this year. What could have made them mushy?

Black Walnut Fruits - Pix ** Updated 7/30

I have a small walnut tree (actually have quite a few, watch your step walking in the backyard, you can break your ankle if your not watching where you are walking) and I decided to plant my garden underneath it. Not until all of my tomato plants started dying, did I realize the toxicity of...

Buff, Just checked out your website. Beautiful plants, chickies and house. I assume they are Buff Orpingtons. They are so pretty. I think I was with my friend when she bought a sage plant like yours. Coolest looking thing. She's a plant freak. She loves her Coleus. I think she has them...

What Are You Planting Today, This Week, This Month?

I'm new to this forum and this thread seems fun. The past couple weeks I've put in my vegetable garden. I've planted an onion mix, lettuce, cucumbers (I'll try my hand at pickling this year again. Last years pickles were yucky, but the cucumbers were really good), tomato plants (a nice mix...

    Gardening magazine?

I was just wondering where other people got their start. Everyone had to start somewhere. I used to just put something in the ground and hoped for the best. I tend to stick to perennials. I hate to spend money on something that may just last through part of the summer. Being in Western...

    Gardening magazine?

Thank you all for the info. I really like magazines because you can keep them and refer to them year yo year. I may just hit a bookstore and grab a couple magazines just to see what is out there. And then go to the library and see what they have available. I can always scan pages and...
