I need advice to plant fall Potatoes!

I may have dug them too soon. I have been letting my goats free range since their pen is bare and hay is hard to come by and if you do find it, it's pricey. I forgot to put the chainlink panel over the barrels one night and they ate the plants. Afraid what did grow would just rot I pulled...

I need advice to plant fall Potatoes!

Have to kinda watch the area where I dumped my buckets. We've already eaten the little ones that I harvested this year, so planting those are out. I couldn't wait to cook them up in some fresh green beans, onions and a bacon. YUMMY! I've always bought seed potatoes. I planted about 4...

    potato experiment 2012

Journey try putting a wanted on craigslist or freecycle. That's what I plan on doing. I've also thought about trying to get 5 gallon buckets and use them. My beds probably fit 8-10 more trash can halves. With no bottoms in them I didn't add any additional drainage holes. I did have...

    potato experiment 2012

baymule you are so correct. It doesn't look like much this year, but I have a garden area under construction, the heat halted the project for this year. The little house behind my gator is the turkey house, next to that is the chicken house and then there is also a duck house. In the middle...

    potato experiment 2012

The great potato experiment is now complete. This first pic is of my set up. My dad had these trash cans that were really trash, the bottoms were worn through. He finished cutting the bottoms off and cut them in half. The harvest was super easy. I used a mix of topsoil and bagged compost...

    harvesting potatoes

Well I guess tomorrow I will go ahead and empty the containers. This was the first year I tried this. In the past I tried putting potatoes in the ground, but harvesting was so darn hard that I thought I'd try it this way this year. I'm all for experimenting in the garden. Somethings things...

    harvesting potatoes

I tried something new this year and planted some potatoes in bottomless containers filled with topsoil/compost mix. I babied them and they were looking beautiful. The the drought hit, but I kept them watered, but decided to let my goats out. The first several weeks I remembered to keep a...

    New Weed Control (hopefully)

I love my goats, but I have to agree on the smart/stupid thing. They are definitely a hot mess of a pet. What you think of as a weed, they think disgusting. Your expensive landscaping.....oh so yummy. That being said I wouldn't give them up for anything. My DH says I truly love aggrevation...

    Peach Tree Bust

The work that goes with the fruit trees doesn't bother me. I would much rather load up the bed of my little JD gator and spend the day tooling around outside instead of trapped in the house, LOL! Even with the terrible heat we just endured I still spent a good amount of time outside creating...

    Peach Tree Bust

Thanks so much! Right now we just pile up the "barn leavin's" to compost, but that takes some time. I will have to give that a try with all my fruit trees. Goodness knows with 7 horses I get plenty of compost to use. :) We are hoping to expand the orchard that we started this fall if the...

    Peach Tree Bust

Catjac1975 do you use composted or right from the barn. I have as many horses as I do fruit trees right now so manure isn't a prob. Do you do this instead of mulching? Currently we mulch them, well we do when funds to purchase a load of mulch is available. If this is an option instead of...

2011 TEG Giant Pumpkin Contest - JOIN US BY AUGUST 1ST!!

I'm out :( Too much heat and no rain has totally killed my garden. I just have 2 birdhouse gourds left down there. Maybe next year, this year was just too much with the extremely wet spring going into drought. Good luck to those that still have pumpkins growing!

2011 TEG Giant Pumpkin Contest - JOIN US BY AUGUST 1ST!!

If my pumpkins are ready in time, I'm in. We put in 2 dozen "giant" pumpkin seeds, 2 dozen lumina seeds and 40 big max seeds. I just got my seeds planted over Fathers Day weekend, so we shall see how that works for the time line. They are looking nice already. We somewhat cheated with the...

I may never get this garden in ...

This year is totally crazy. I managed this morning to get 31 tomatoes in the ground :barnie. Usually I get them in around Mothers Day, I've never waited until after Fathers Day. After this next round of rain I'm hoping to get the pickling cukes, squash, zukes and melons in. Hopefully I'll...

Anyone have cute ideas for veggie markes? (Pics Please)

Plastic knives, what a great idea. As my luck would have it my hubby managed to get a box of 1000 plastic knives last week and I was wondering what to use them for. I was like seriously, we haven't gone thru probably 50 plastic knives in the 15 years we've been married. Nice to know that they...

    Shedding Horses=Early Spring?

I noticed this afternoon that a couple of my horses weren't quit so "furry" so I hope it does mean early spring. I'm sooooo done with winter, but with my group it's hard to use that as a spring is coming guide. My quarter/arab - not nearly as "furry" as he was a few weeks ago welsh/walker -...

I just found 3 of those nasty things on my tomates this morning. Hard to find, easy to remove and hilarious to watch the chickens when tossed in the run.

    My new rescue pet

Excellent save! My all time favorite spider. When I was little my dad showed us to gently toss a grasshopper into the web. It would quickly spin it up. I can't wait until I can show my kids that trick, it's sooooo neat to watch.
