no worries :D

I certainly was not expecting to grow a 28 pound blue hubbard. I doubt I will grow them again either. The vine took over half of my back yard! Next year I am planning on trying small pie pumpkins or maybe some cinderellas.

Ok... no idea what's going on... but the prizes did arrive today!

I got some prizewinner seeds from Dill's...

Wifey, your choice:

2 seeds Show King Squash (parent was 836 lbs)

2 seeds Dill's Atlantic Giant (parentage 1187 lbs)

or 1 of each (squash and pumpkin)

... hopefully you'll have SOME room in your garden for these?

Now I don't feel so bad. My plans for my Atlantic Giants were put down by a couple of lovely does that I will looking to be putting cross hairs on in a few weeks. Both pumpkins were BIG but these lovely girls decided to stomp a hole into and eat the insides. Luckily they ate those and left the Jack-O-Lanterns alone. In the big picture it was a good trade considering what I could have lost. So we had plenty of carving pumpkins for my daughter, the nieces and nephews but I was irritated that I didn't get to carve a pumpkin with a chainsaw this year.

Oh well there's always next year.

Congrats Wifezilla those are impressive.

Here's what I did with my small "extras"...

A chicken family. Mommy, daddy (he was delicious) and the baby chicks.

I vote for more contests! All kinds of contests...

By Genus and species...

=====

Biggest dry Lima bean seed

Prettiest Dahlia, by vote

Prettiest Zinnia, by vote

Biggest Marigold, by diameter in inches...oh, Marigolds have several species, so of each species

Tallest Sunflower

Widest sunflower flowerhead

Darkest red sunflower that produces viable seed. Sterile sunflowers don't count

Biggest cantaloupe...by garden zone!

=====

And, other kinds of garden contests too!

Weed pulling contests! (grrr)

Filling buckets or containers of bad bugs...(bleeyehch)

Hybridizing and crossing up new and unusual crops, for example, someone might cross a dent corn with a sweet corn and come up with a decent sweet corn that can also be used as a decent grinding corn. Or maybe someone can cross tomatoes to get a tomato plant that is small and stiffly upright like a pepper plant is that makes nice cherry tomatoes. (now that would be nice! a line of no-stake tomatoes!) How about a nice tender crunchy kale that also makes good broccoli heads?

I quite agree! Not everyone can grow monster pumpkins, but everyone can grow something and we need more contests to incite improvement!
