This summer I grew some Succotash Pole and there were a few pods of the speckled purple. I see that even the beans differ a little. They're shinier and not shaped the same. Is this what they call an outcross? I'll be eating the oddballs since they don't look like true Succotash. Has anyone else grown Succotash and did they produce some pods like this for you too?

That looks like an outcross to me @colcol . I've grown Succotash, they all looked like your seeds on the right.

Had some bean picture fun today. There are a couple that didn’t do super great for me this year, likely because of a giant pine tree throwing shade on them in the late afternoon.

Castellfolit de Boix
Such an incredibly productive bean for me, a little sensitive to humidity though. I’m not sure yet if it can be eaten as a green bean, but I’m guessing it is. Semi-runner plants.

Barrangeonnier
Bush bean. Later maturing in my zone, but nice production.

Bird Egg Blue
Bush bean. This one is usually late for me, but not this year. This is a gem you’ve got here @Bluejay77 !

Beefy Resilient Grex
Semi-runner. Very early variety, and easy to shell the thin pods.

Angel Eye
Bush bean. Only love for this bean. Excellent in every way! ❤️

Mascarade de Briel
Pole bean. Wonderful production.

Rote Keibitzbohne
Pole bean. Really big seeds. I believe this is a dry bean,

Dwarf Shield
Semi runner. Such teeny little seeds! Photo is deceiving, but lovely little seeds. No culls, all the beans were perfect.

Mangetout de Pleine Panier
Very tall semi-runner, even a short pole. Huge yield, no culls.

Bean pics continued... Some of these did poorly this year, but I have plenty to try again. Others did well.

Polish Pea Bean
Semi runner. A navy type. Little cuties. I grew them both crowded and in a planter and they still yielded great.

Cara de La Virgen de Banera
Pole, late maturing but worth the wait. ☺️ Vines were just huge.

Saint Sacrament
Bush wax bean. Nice and early.

Princess Rose
Bush bean, a Robert Lobito bean I think. Nuggets of pink goodness.💖

Hemelvaartboontje
Pole. There was an outcross in these, so the one true to type plant got crowded. Will need to try again in 2024. But I love it!❤️

Goldener Regan
Another struggling pole bean in shade.
Hopefulll I’ll have better luck in 2024. 🤞

A favorite of 2024. Such a fantastic pole bean.

Zargana of Zestos
Big mama beans, shorter vines for a pole bean. Surprised how early it was considering the seeds are so big.

Zugdidi Flat Cake
The only pole bean that I know of with the word cake in the name.
Yummy. 🍰

Turkey #1
Pole bean that had extraordinary production. I wonder if it’s from Turkey, or if it’s an allusion to the bird? 🦃

 

[Branching Out]

Just a quick note to say that my little packages of network beans went in the mail today Bluejay. Fingers crossed that the parcel reaches its destination by December 11th. In the end I managed to get 50 each of Van Gogh's Olive, White Coco, and Coco de Belle Isle (such a cheery pink and white bean), however I was defeated by those tiny Orange Speckled Tepary beans; there are only 15 little seeds from that one. Sorry about that. This year our summer was just too hot and dry for beans I think. The White Coco in particular was not able to set blossoms until very late September, but those tenacious plants are still hanging in there; today I picked 100 pods off that one to finish drying indoors. Weird growing season.

Bush bean. This one is usually late for me, but not this year. This is a gem you’ve got here @Bluejay77 !

It's amazing Canadian growers of Bird Egg Blue say the bean is late as it is also here. However Canadian growers grow such nicer looking seed that I seem to be albe to grow here. I don't know what it is I'm doing wrong with this bean.

Curt Burroughs lima collector and breeder from Leota, Iowa. Sent me this bean in 2018. The 2020 grow out and the 2023 grow out show some slight variations from each other but of course they were grown in a different soil both those years.

The 2023 Segregation is the the one I will continue to try to select for and Curt Burroughs has told me he never named this bean that I could if I can think of a good name for it.
