This year, due to the forecast of an exceptionally cold May, I did not make seedlings. I wake up the seeds in a sprouter and when they have a solid sprout, I put them directly in the target location. I think this will reduce the possibility of the seeds rotting in the ground and the Delia fly larvae will not have enough time to destroy the embryos. In addition, young plants will not waste time on acclimatization. I will soon know if my assumptions were correct.

yes @Blue-Jay all these cool and rainy days are a challenge. i'm not doing any starts inside at the moment, but i'm wondering how the seeds i planted have done with all these cold and rainy days in a row. i'm not even going to go outside and look until Saturday unless we get enough of a break in the rains and i see the great UFO in the sky which signals me towards the gardens.

The darn postal strike is back on. Well, that's it for mailing seeds for this season. There have been a few people ordering seeds all of a sudden anticipating the shut down. One lady is driving quite a ways to get here Saturday to do a pick up at my house instead. A bean person, because let's face it, who else would do that!

That’s really bad news. Let’s hope negotiations move faster than last year. You have so many great seeds to offer that it would be very sad if the whole season passed without being able to trade. Good luck, Canada.

Thank you Artorius. I had a query recently about bean seeds that 'had maggots in them'. I had never heard of such a thing and the seeds had been in the freezer, so should be fine, but after your comment, I researched the Delia fly. I think this is the problem this grower had. Thank you for new knowledge (although I have mixed feelings about yet another possible problem with keeping heirloom beans alive).

I had never heard of such a thing and the seeds had been in the freezer, so should be fine, but after your comment, I researched the Delia fly. I think this is the problem this grower had. Thank you for new knowledge (although I have mixed feelings about yet another possible problem with keeping heirloom beans alive).

I think on my website I am just about at the end of the seed selling season. Sometimes there are a couple of late buyers but most of the seed selling season for me is over. My last order was two days ago. It will start very slowly again in September with a couple of sales. Of course after new years it will be off to the races again.

i'm not sure where you are at there, but so far in all my years of growing beans here i've not experienced the flies attacking my beans.

Neither had I flowerbug, which is why I was so surprised that I got a report of it. I found it difficult to advise, but assured the lady that the beans had been in the freezer and that it probably was 'something in the soil'. Turns out, it wasn't, but when Artorius mentioned the Delia fly, I googled it and all became clear. I had never seen it in England and not now in Germany, but this lady had. This fly clearly exists in Germany and in Poland, neighbouring countries. Always something new to learn. Unfortunately a new pest!

Baby rabbits managed to get through my fence last year and chewed off the hyacinth beans as they were just starting to flower. Only other beans they bothered were the red noodle beans but I soon put a barrier up and had no other issues. I am happy to add that my cats have killed two rabbits in the past week

What did you use for a barrier. I suppose I could use some of my deer fence netting.....??? We had a game camera up last summer and saw opossums and bunny rabbits in garden as well as a ground hog den showed up. Never saw the ground hog on camera.

I've 2 lots of beans in now. I think by next week I'll have my recent bean orders in and can get more inground. When it was up in the 80's a couple weeks ago I planted Scarlet Runner Beans and Good Mother Stallard. Mother was up a couple days ago but then we had rains and temps have dropped to 55-60 days and 43-46 nights. This is about the time I usually put tomato seedlings out. We are probably in our last week of below 50's at night. Probably slam right into the 80's in 2 weeks!
