I made the mistake of planting all my King of the Garden Limas and all of my Scarlet Empress/Magic Runner Beans. I don't see them sprouting but I did find a swollen up Lima and it isn't soggy so hope it grows with the warmer temps! My Monte Gusto wax beans also did not sprout and I didn't dig for them to see what's up. Last year I had 30 feet of peas. This year nada. I also have vole tunnels!
And after sorting through the seed hoard, found a large bag of those limas from gurney's.. must be couple years old so maybe I can replant that section.

I planted out four Blue Jay bush bean seedlings the other day, and insects devoured two of them. Wood bugs seem to favour this variety. What a drag. 😠

Meanwhile, I purchased some root trainers recently and I am trying them out for starting some bean and watermelon seeds. The container has 28 cells, and is about the size of a large shoebox. So far the bean seedlings look like they're doing well. I'll wait a couple more days before I plant them in the garden.

My pole beans are that are entwining around the poles are taking off. The others are just hanging out. It has been chilly the past week.

I found an article on lima beans https://www.nal.usda.gov/collections/stories/lima-beans. The person who linked it pulled out this interesting fact "The Moche culture of Peru created art of them, depicting the beans as warriors and associating them with nobility and ferocity." Wow! Now if only the lima beans would beat back the garden pests. 🧌

Well @Blue-Jay the comedic postal sagas continue. I went to the post officeB today with the idea of mailing your 2nd box and, low and behold, the federal computer program they use for creating the stickers for packages & tracking is down and out. Apparently this began yesterday morning, and thus far, has resulted in some near brawls at the postal counter. I'm quite friendly with this postal lady as she's worked there for as long as I've been mailing stuff and she shared the scoop that I'm fortunate to have avoided the various colourful spectacles of impatience among upset customers (I was alone when I went this afternoon). So, I will go back tomorrow and see if the program is working again yet, and I think I might put on a helmet just in case. What a year so far of mailing beans and it's only January!!! Strikes, increases, brawls...what next?

On the positive side of today, I was elated to find a mailer full of beans from Spain in my mailbox! I did a trade with a really nice grower there, she's a real bean afficionado too, and looky looky at the goodies she sent! 🥰 I'm especially interested in the Blue Sword pole beans! Kinda thrilling! ❤️‍🔥View attachment 72087

Can I ask where you found the root trainers? I searched for them a few years ago and the only place I found them available had a minimum order amount of over $200 I believe.

It was the same for me !! I thought the root trainers were a great invention but I couldn't find them reasonably priced either. So, I just bought 5" deep pots to use for potting up after the seedlings outgrow their " baby pots " . They don't have grooves inside to help the roots grow downward but there is much less circling in them than with shorter pots.

Sure-- I ordered them from Vesey's Seeds. The quality is excellent, and the price was just $28CAD($20USD.) I'm very pleased with the product so far. 😊
