Then I guess the question would be, if that's the case, what's the stressor. I don't see what that could be, since both sets got chicken manure as well as adequate water..

temperature, soil quality, light, wind, moisture, neighboring plants...

I had all the plans in the world to deal with all those tomatoes out there today. As everyone knows, tomatoes are not patient and won't wait until you have time to get to them. I started first by rinsing all the many bottles of seeds that were done fermenting, because those were the most pressing (obv). So I'm really glad I got that done, and then readied myself with boxes and marker to go out and start collecting the truly crazy number of tomatoes I planted this year. I thought I'd take one quick peek at the news before I go. Well, that made for a total derailment of the day.

I remember asking my mum years ago if she remembered the day JFK was killed, and to my surprise she did. I don't know why I found that surprising, maybe because she wasn't into world events and never talked about stuff like that. I clearly recall asking her if she cried, to which she very hesitantly said yes, and my significant disapproval of that answer (mothers are not supposed to cry). I thought of that moment today again. It's like my generations version of that event.

I'm grateful that tomorrow I'll still have the tomatoes to distract from the bad news of today. That is a truly great thing about gardens, they have no patience and insist you get to them right away, forcing you to pry yourself away from unhappy distractions. It's not the most common *joyful* experience people relate about having a garden, but it's become my favorite thing. They make you sort of keep on truckin'.

i don't watch tv, that avoids a lot of useless drama and political BS. i also don't listen to the radio or check the news on the internet very often (once a day or so). i do check the weather forecast once in a while. the phone i check some days and have to have it by me for certain times but that's not normal. e-mail i do check fairly often if i'm inside and working on the computer for some reason.

being outside in the gardens is certainly a lot better than being stuck inside - i wish my body could do a lot more as i would be outside even longer. i tend to work a few hours and then take a break and if something else can get done i'll go out again for as long as possible.

I used to not care much about world events and politics. And then I had kids, and all that changed. The future matters to me more than ever now. Very sad my children won't have a world with Charlie Kirk leading the way.

Tomato 'Pink Champagne' has blown my mind with it's production. Given that it's in a pot, and has received the bare minimum of both care and nutrients it really yielding well. In ground this would seem average, but constricted in a pot typically drives the production way down. I couldn't capture all the fruit trusses in the pic. Bit late, but big yields and lateness go hand in hand.

I'm shocked that the poppies kept going until now, mid September! These I'm sure are the very last flowers though. The plants are awful looking when drying, but that's the price I'll pay to collect the seeds.

First 'Hamburg Parsley' plants. I'm impressed that they bulked up so much, didn't expect that. Really looking forward to what these'll taste like in soup!

The horizontal holly, should be staked. Just haven't carved out the time and effort to do it. Prettiest one I've grown ever, so sad the seed won't come true.

'Yellow Submarine' tomatoes turning out to be quite a unique little variety. They're basically all meat. No juice, kind of hard to describe, but I like it. Not a fan of super watery squishy cherries. I think the look of them is rather unique as well.

'Bulgaria' tomato sent to me by a lovely preservationist in Germany, haven't tried it yet but it looks like the perfect pink beefsteak. Heavy too. The plant is just loaded with these boats. Reminds me a lot of a really good Brandywine.

Try a Minusk Lion! Several of us grew them this year, outdoors and even non Tomato growers got good results, very large good tasting fruit.
