They do look like grass when they're young! Very thin, wispy stems. I always thought that my location for the chive mound was poor and that explained why the taste was so subtle/nonexistent, but I'm thinking now maybe they just are really mild? I honestly appreciate them more as flowers than as food, particularly garlic chives which have the flatter stems with white pom pom flowers. I planted some in the perennial flower garden.I keep trying to grow chives, but never get anything but "grass" I have been wondering if they are just so mild I can't taste it. It certainly seems like odd looking grass![]()

Thus far in my perennial allium journey, I would highly recommend Egyptian Walking onions and/or Welsh onions (which originate in Russia/Mongolia not Wales). They both taste similar to grocery store green onions, but with more 'oomph' and that delicious fresh from the garden flavor. I love that they clump, and I actually look forward to dividing them for sharing with others who haven't discovered yet perennial onions. DH was impressed! And he's a bit of an onion connoisseur. They took me a year and a half to establish, but they might be quicker for you being in a warmer climate.
