Google gout and see if your symptoms fit and what foods set it off. You can go to your doctor to confirm the condition and get prescription for it that really works. As for those custom fitted orthotics ... I got custom fitted at "Good Feet " with their supports and paid over $350. and after wearing them for 4 days, I couldn't even walk as the pain was so bad. Took them back to the "Good Feet " store where they insisted that they were correct and I couldn't get a new fitting , new supports much less a refund. I quit wearing them and I was cured within 2 days. Total waste of money for me!

I have a suggestion about finding a good orthopedic surgeon. Ask someone who works in surgery or imaging at your local hospital. THEY KNOW who the good docs are, but are not supposed to make suggestions unless you ask. And be specific. Ask who they would go to if they needed foot surgery, or a knee replacement, or a new hip. Some docs are really good at one thing or another.

If you go to an independant orthopedic clinic, and get your images done at their facility, "in house," that's fine. But be aware that THOSE xray techs are paid by those doctors, and will therefore not be as independant in their opinions. If you dont know who owns or manages the facility, ask! Ask who is going to read your films - the doctor who ordered them, and would benefit from telling you you need surgery, or an independant radiologist. Its fine for your ortho doc to read the films (or mri or whatever) but just keep in mind that they are not as indepedant as an uninvolved radiologist would be. See 2 different ortho docs if you're not sure who to go to. Most times you wont need to have the imaging done again, just ask them if they can make the images available to the other doc, or send them with you on a disc. Unless your bone is sticking out of your skin, you dont need to rush into any decisions!!

I'm SUPPOSED to have Rheumatoid Arthritis along with my Peripheral Ulcerative Keratitis, but I don't seem to except for the pinky finger I broke in 2006 and didn't see a doc about. Something about dense bones. Instead of the RA being the associated problem it's the thyroid. So, among the 7 persons diagnosed with this PUK I'm the unique different one. Course, it's extra nice to be one of the 3 still living.

My ankles have always since I was a kid, even when on the junior hi track team, they unexpectedly weaken. Especially bad when I'd be ice skating. Left one did a sudden weakness on me today. Learned to keep going right through it in 7th grade trying to stay right behind Paul Johnson for the 2nd place points. Nobody could go as fast as him so it was my job to stay on his heels. It made him go faster if I evened up with him. Especially had to do that at the Slater meet. ...cep'n the time I crashed on a hurdle in the 80 yard.

Feets. Kinda important to keep them working.

Course, I'm sure glad we don't have elephant feet. They may be heavy duty, but SHOOT, it'd sure be a pain to clip those toenails.

TOENAILS!

Anyone got a mini chainsaw for the 3rd and 4th toenails of my feet for clipping them? Those things are an inch thick! My toenail clippers shake in fear each time I get them near my feet...

I could send the sheet metal side-cutters Dad used on his toenails.

Surgery?!

I sure hope not. Years ago, the neurologist said we can do it for your back, you will have less pain but won't be able to walk any better - too late for that. Second opinion was the orthopedic surgeon. (Seemed kind of a good idea my primary care guy sent me to 2 specialists with different training ;).) The orthopod said, "No surgery for you! Your bones may heal in a way that will make things worse."

The foot seems better today & I enjoyed another foot bath . . . aaahhh . . . Put that Voltarin on last night and slept well. I can walk without putting the heal down despite the usual lack of stability in that leg. Awkward but that just adds to the "stylin'."

It wouldn't be fair for me to survive RA in earlier years only to have gout now!

oh and Marshall, trim your toenails after soaking your feet - you can even put some epsom salt in the H2O ;). a podiatrist often sees people just because of their toenail problems.

The good leg will hurt because it has taken up the slack for so long. My husband had 2 knee replacements in 7 months the 2nd being in July. It is a miracle. I wish he had had it done 10 years ago. He went to the NE baptist hospital in Boston. One of the best in the world. He meet many people coming to get other surgeon's mistakes repaired. If you need surgery go the the best hospital near to you-not the nearest. I say why go to Walmart if it costs the same at Lord and Taylor? He is a big baby medically and he did great!
