Hello!

I am trying to find some perennials that would be suitable for a spot that is in deep shade all day except for the hours of 2-4pm when it gets full, direct sun exposure. I live in zone 6a and I am worried that shade plants will burn in the hot afternoon sun, however I can't see sun-loving plants doing well in such a spot either.

Does anyone else have experience with a garden that has western exposure and only two hours of hot afternoon sun?

Many thanks!

I would suggest any part-shade to part sun plant. Some prefer more light then shade but for your zone, you should have quite a few to chose from. I know Coneflower, if you are looking for the wild flower look, can tolerate part share to full sun! Maybe some gerber daisies or shasta daisies?

I hope you find those suggestions useful.... but you really should have an idea of what you would to look as each day you are out there!

Welcome! I have the EXACT same problem (I'm even in the same zone!), and found a couple of annuals that have done well: dahlias, wishbone flower and vinca. I think the best plants tho are ones that are more for foliage than flowers. I ended up giving up & planting shrubs there instead. :/ I'm going to keep an eye on this thread so that I can maybe get some ideas.

I love toad lilies. They bloom in mostly shade, and are perennial, coming in a multitude of varieties.

Thanks for the suggestions! I appreciate the help.:)

Be sure to keep an eye on coleus & toad lily & anything for full shade to make sure they don't dry out. Afternoon sun can be brutal in the summer time.
