Garden Ornament
OK so are ants a problem or not? I found a nest last night, about 5 feet out of my garden, but judging from the amount of ants I saw the nest probably goes well into my garden area underground. They are the medium sized, red, biting ants. They seemed to be moving, they were carrying pupae from the nest, across my garden, and into the evergreens that edge our property. Imagine the ground moving in a 3' swath that is 30 ft long...creepy. So, are these suckers the reason my gremlin gourds are all yellow and dead looking or are they not a problem for a garden?
-- ant poisons often don't work real well in the garden (when they do, it involves long-term use) and the other usual solutions like digging the ants up or pouring boiling water on the nest are, obviously, not without disadvantages if the ants are nesting in the roots of a plant you wanted to save
