Anyone know what this is?

My buddy asked me this summer if I could identify a plant that grew alongside his house. He didn't plant it there. The flowers are very small. What appears to be blooms between the sets of leaves are actually seed pods. The seeds inside are small and brown. The pods are three lobed and very fleshy but firm with one seed in each lobe. The plant came up on a single sturdy stalk, then branched out and flowered. I have no idea what it is:

I sure don't recognize that plant. Do you know if it came up there last year too? Is there an odor? About how tall is it?There are lots of smart people on this forum; I bet someone can identify it!
 
Some people think it keeps gophers out of the garden . . .

Yes, all euphorbia is toxic. A lot of people will have a allergic reaction from the sap. But, it does look very cool!
