. . . who just has to open the lid to the after-pull-date milk container,

just so you can sniff at it

before
dumping it down the sink?

Unless it has gone thru several temp changes, it probably still is good. Frequently the sniff test gives you the residue on the jug/carton, not the contents. Best is the Taste Test!

I'm a food scientist by education, btw.

I drink soy also, but it spoils too. (I always sniff it before I pour) Gary my husband drinks cow milk (from the store) but he has very bad hayfever allergies and doesn't smell well so I get sniffing duty for him.

Have you tried the new Silk coconut milk? It is awesome!!!!

Sniffing sour milk has become something of a metaphor in this house. DD moved out 5 years ago and she was the last person to drink cow's milk. I began to think I had become lactose intolerant to some degree about 15 years ago. DW hasn't been a milk-drinker as an adult, at all.

I grew up on a little farm with milk cows. It was what was called a cow/calf operation but some of those cows were dairy and we always supplemented the Calf Manna with fresh milk and had so much for our own use that . . . well, it was wonderful! Cream and butter and milk. I still get away with having a little dairy - just better not have that 2nd bowl of ice cream , that sort of thing.

Having breakfast cereal was something I wasn't quite prepared to give up, 15 years ago. I'm having a bowl of honey nuts & oats with fresh raspberries this morning - with soy milk. Soy milk for this purpose is fine. Rice milk is okay. I haven't tried coconut milk . . . other than from a coconut. (There's also a "coconut" carbonated drink that's okay, if'n you like that sort of thing ;).)

Almond milk is real good but I can't really taste the almonds in my cereal bowl. Blue Diamond almond milk seems to be stronger-flavored than Silk. I usually drink coffee black (and brewed with fresh ground beans :p) but putting BD almond milk in my coffee is really, something of a treat! Better than most espresso drinks!!

Steve, you must have no gardening duties to attend to, to be asking us questions like this! lol . I don't have to sniff since we go through milk before the expiration date. I do though always check the dates at the store and get the latest one.
