I have been wondering if my self-sown asparagus seedlings are making my bed a bit too dense in spots. It certainly can help fill in holes if you lose a plant or two to a difficult winter.

Also, make sure your straw for mulch doesn't have many seed heads in it (and avoid hay, which definitely does). I had that happen once and had to spent a lot of time weeding. :barnie

What a timely thread! Walked into Tractor Supply yesterday, on the markdown - markdown - markdown rack were asparagus! Six crowns to a bag, $3.29 a bag! I got four bags, 24 crowns. It gets even better. They rang up at $2.39 a bag!!!

I went home with my treasures. I pulled a wagon load of weeds from a long strip, dug a trench, filled it with horse manure and covered it with dirt. I drove a T-post at each end to mark the row, then covered it with paper feed sacks held in place with bricks. I cut holes in the paper, dug a hole and planted the crowns.
