Back again lol. Anyone know what this is?

It’s a tree the tallest are around 15-20 foot range. I think it produces some kind of berries near the top of the tree but it hasn’t bloomed yet this year. I’ll try to get some better pictures when I go back out later.

i'm bad at identifying trees, my first guess is an ash tree (from the bottom picture), but don't take my word for it.

The leaves are opposite instead of staggered so that is like an ash. The bark doesn't look right and an ash can get a lot taller than 15' to 20'. I can't tell how big those leaves actually are but even the ones in the background look fairly large. An ash has serrated leaves, I can't tell for sure but those look pretty smooth to me. There are different varieties of ash trees.

Are those limbs or trunk hollow or solid. Do you know what the flowers look like? Any strong smell when you crush a leaf? Do you know the color of the ripe berries? I don't see any thorns. It makes me think of an understory shrub more than a tall tree.

I can't come up with any suggestions. Everything I think of I see a problem. It will be interesting to see what others think.

I don’t think it’s an Ash tree. Or at least the kind I’m used to around here because those are absolutely huge. I got some more photos of the bark and branch structure. There are flowers in a few pictures but they belong to the giant privet I’ve been cleaning out of that clearing. I don’t have any pictures of the flowers or fruit. They haven’t bloomed yet this year. And I only have a vague memory of seeing clusters of berries last fall/winter.

Possibly Mountain Ash.

I don’t think it’s Mountain ash. Supposedly we don’t have any in the state. And the leaves are similar but mountain ash has more leaflets in the clusters.

I’m thinking sumac. We’re the berries red, small and in clusters?

@baymule i think they were small and in clusters but black. The only kind we have here is poison sumac so that would be concerning if it is. I won’t react but my dad who comes and helps with cutting bigger stuff like this is allergic.

The red berry sumac is used as a spice. I’ve gathered the red berries which are really a hard seed with a red coating. The red coating is lemon flavored and is used I Middle East cooking. Unfortunately I reacted to it and couldn’t use it. I have chemical issues ant that extends to some spices too.

that was actually my first thought when seeing it, but i don't recall the bark of sumac being like that so i kept looking. still dunno what it is.
