Butternut squash report...

Mary, it is up to you how you grow them. If you have a fence, you can train them up the fence. I let mine grow and then put the vine where it is convenient for me. As Bills says, you can always prune. Particularly late in the season, when you know there is no chance of ripening. I saw a flower on mine yesterday- no way that is going to have time...I would try one hill of them and see how you like them.
 
No Bills...I don't have any corner where to plant it. I have only 1 long bed. About half is perenials and the other half veggies. This is the only sunny area. The rest of the beds are in shade. In the middle of the yard is a play structure and that is the other sunny spot.

No fense either. In the back of the bed is a solid wooden fence but I plant my tomatoes against it.
